Benny L. Hackney, age 81, of Lexington, entered this life on Feb. 7, 1937, in Trimble County near Bedford, Ky. He was the son of the late Morton and Emily Mikesell Hackney. He was raised in Bedford and was inducted into the United States Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Lance Corporal during the invasion of Lebanon in 1958. He was honored as a sharp shooter and was honorably discharged on Dec. 15, 1961, receiving the Good Conduct Medal. In 1960 he married Mary Anne Nordgren of Philadelphia, Penn. This happy union of 58 years was blessed with daughters, Pamela, Carla and a son, Rodney. He was a mechanic for many years, including 18 years working at Holloway Redi Mix in Middletown, Ky. Benny was always a hard worker and owned and operated his own trucking business for 20 years. He was proud to never have had an accident or citation. Benny enjoyed classic cars, gardening, sharing his produce with his family, friends and neighbors. Benny could grow anything that came his way. Benny died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at 5:21 a.m. at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Ind.
Benny will be missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Anne Nordgren Hackney of Lexington; his loving daughters, Pamela Brown and her husband, David of Lexington, and Carla Arnold of Hanover, Ind.; his son, Rodney Hackney of Lexington, Ky.; his loving grandchildren, Jenna Gardner, Evan Hackney, Annelise Hackney, Alexia Arnold and Adam Brown; his adoring great-granddaughter, Arden Brown; his brother, Curt Hackney and his wife, Joyce of Bedford; his sister, Judy Kelly and her husband, Bobby of Milton, Ky.; his sisters-in-law, Jean Hackney of Carrollton, Ky., Donna Simpson of Campbellsburg, Ky.; his brother-in-law, Jack Simpson of Nashville, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morton Hackney and Emily Mikesell Hackney; his brothers, Leonard, Leroy, Raymond, Virgil and Paul Allen Hackney; and his sister, Nanny Joyce Sullivan.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Ind. with Bro. George Severn officiating. Interment was in the Bedford Cemetery in Bedford. A flag presentation was conducted by the United States Marine Corps Ceremonial Unit.
