Mr. Everett Gerald Owen, 83, of Hanover, Ind., formerly of Milton, Ky. and Indianapolis, Ind. died Sunday, August 11, 2013 at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Ryker Owen of Hanover, Ind.; a son, Everett Douglas Owen and his wife, Paula Jo of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, Debra Elaine Ledbetter and her companion, Dave Mullins of Cunot, Ind.; two step sons, Jason Box and his companion, Kim Burge of Lexington, Ind., Jonathan Cain and his wife, Lauren of Sellersburg, Ind.; a step daughter, Carol Box-Joslin and her husband, Jim of Hardinsburg, Ind.; a sister, Norma Owen Eavey and her husband, Bobby of Jasonville, Ind.; his grandchildren, Jeremy Weedland Dickey (Nicole); Jessica Elaine Ledbetter (Chris Charles), Lauren Michelle Owen, Everett Jared Owen and Keith Anthony Owen; his great grandchildren, Chase Weedland Dickey, Hallie Ledbetter, Jadyn Dalgleish, Hunter Andrew, Elizabeth and Garrett Ledbetter; Zoey Charles; his step grandchildren - Seth Harvey, Samantha Duvall (Charley), Tori Harvey (Cody); Blake Skinner; Ethan Nattermann and Bristol Cain; Jamie King (Dustin); his step great grandchildren - Mason Shafer, Jocelyn Marowelli; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Elizabeth Joan Goss Owen, who died July 2006, his step great granddaughter, Sophia Shafer, his sisters, Myla Owen Hash, Elsie Fay Owen, Agnes Owen Earle, Ida May Sipes, Iona Dell Owen, and Hazel Owen Morris, his brothers, Albert, Floyd, Roy, Ora Ray, and Carl Owen.
Gerald entered this life on February 18, 1930 in Highland Township in Greene County, Ind. He was the loving son of the late, Everett Devorse and Alpina Burris Owen. He was raised in Greene County and was a 1948 graduate of Midland High School. Gerald was inducted into the United States Army and rose to the rank of Corporal during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and returned home. Gerald was united in marriage on June 30, 1956 in Indianapolis, Ind. to Elizabeth Joan Goss. This happy union was blessed with one son, Everett Douglas and one daughter, Debra Elaine. Gerald was employed with General Motors at the Allison Plant working as the tool crib manager and retired after 30 years and seven hours. He also owned and operated E. Owen Insulation for 30 plus years. Gerald and Elizabeth Joan enjoyed fifty years of marriage together until her death in July 2006. He retired to Milton, Ky. and enjoyed getting involved in the community. He served as a Milton City Commissioner for twelve years, member of the Milton Lions Club, the Milton Masonic Lodge No. 947 F. & A.M. and served as a past master and was first a member of the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge No. 162 and was raised on October 23, 1957, the Milton Baptist Church and the Madison Moose Lodge No. 765. Gerald attended the Mt. Byrd Christian Church in Milton. "Gerry" as he was known to his Florida friends enjoyed wintering in Eustis, Fla. Gerald enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, traveling and being with his family. Gerald was united in marriage on August 10, 2012 in Madison to Alice Ryker. Gerald and Alice had resided the past year in Hanover.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 West 38th Street in Indianapolis, Ind. officiated by Bro. Aaron Snelling.
Visitation is Wednesday, August 14, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre 325 Demaree Dr. Madison, Ind.
Milton Masonic Lodge No. 947 F.& A.M. will conduct a Masonic service on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison, Ind. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery.
The family requests memorials in memory of Gerald to the Charity of the Donor's Choice, contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
