Freda Fagin (Rowlette) Dice (1918 - 2013)

Freda Fagin Rowlette Dice, age 95 of Rapid City, SD, formerly of Milton, Ky. entered this life on February 28, 1918 in Trimble County, Ky. She was the loving daughter of the late, Rev. Daniel Perry and Mary Lew Holderfield Rowlette. She lived on a farm in Trimble County until the age of nine. Freda accepted Christ and was baptized in the Ohio River at a revival meeting and the congregation sang, Shall We Gather at the River. This began her long an active service to ministry. Freda stated that when she was nine years old her father heard the call from God to become a minister, so the family moved to the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., where he studied for three years and then the family moved back to the farm. Her father was soon called to pastor the churches of Dupont and Wirt. Freda graduated high school in Dupont, Ind. with five other students her graduation present was a trip to the Northern Baptist Convention in Colorado Springs, Co. This is where she met her soon to be husband, Merris Dice. Freda was soon off to Franklin College and Merris off to Baylor University in Texas. Freda and Merris were united in marriage on June 22, 1938 by the Rev. Daniel Perry Rowlette. This would begin along life of ministry beginning with their first churches in Texas, while Merris finished college. They soon moved to Louisville to the Southern Baptist Seminary and Merris preached on the field. Freda and Merris were called to preach in Rising Sun, Ind. and this is where their son, Myron was born. From Rising Sun they were called to the Wirt Baptist Church, where Freda's father had pastored earlier in life. They would soon find themselves in Matton, Ill. where they lived for ten wonderful, fruitful years and this is where their two daughters, Cheryl and Carmen were born. Freda was a faithful and active pastor's wife through the years in many churches in Texas, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado and Missouri. Freda was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker her entire life. She also enjoyed being the adoring grandmother of four and the great grandmother of nine. After retirement Freda and Merris settled in Milton and they still served the ministry by preaching as interim pastors. Freda and Merris were members of the First Baptist Church in downtown Madison for many years after retirement and they enjoyed their lasting friendships there. When they felt they needed to be near their children they moved to Marietta, Ga. and then to Pinehurst, NC to be near their son, Myron. They resided in Quail Haven Retirement Home in Pinehurst for ten years and enjoyed ministering there. Freda cared for her beloved husband until his death on December 11, 2005, but she remained strong and still encouraged many with her letters and testimony throughout the rest of her life. In 2010, Freda moved to Rapid City, SD to reside at Clarkson Healthcare to be near her daughter, Carmen. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her tenth great grandchild. Freda was lovingly cared for at Clarkson Healthcare until she passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2013. Freda had written, in her final story of her life, that "Someday you will hear that I am dead. Not so! I've just gone into the Presence of God!"
Freda will be lovingly remembered by her son, M. Myron Dice and his wife, Barbara of Pinehurst, NC; her loving daughters, Cheryl J. Ard and her husband, Gary of Boise, Idaho; and Carmen D. Abernathie and her husband, Gordon "Butch" of Rapid City, SD; her four grandchildren, Michelle, Andrew, Erin and Trevor; and nine great grandchildren, Anna Lucia, Nicholas, Natalia, Bethany, Tyler, Lilly, Owen, Emma and Olivia. Freda also is remembered by her God daughter, Peggy Eckerty of Vevay, Ind. as well as many cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, The Rev. Daniel Perry Rowlette and Mary Lew Holderfield Rowlette; her infant sister; her husband, The Rev. Merris Dice died, December 11, 2005.
Freda will be lovingly remembered in a Celebration of Life ceremony on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 416 Vine Street in downtown Madison, Ind., officiated by the Rev. Brian Teater and the Rev. Dennis Bickers. Interment will follow at the Bedford I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bedford, Ky. Friends may gather on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church until the time of service. Expressions of sympathy may be given in remembrance of Freda to the American Baptist Women and Ministries National Support. Cards are available at the funeral home and at the church.
