Perkins Sams Obituary

Perkins Daugherty Sams passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2010 in Midland, Texas at the age of 82. Perkins was born on September 4, 1927 in Deland, Florida to Murray and Genevieve Sams. He attended the University of Virginia before enlisting in the Army and serving on the Manhattan project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. After the service he embarked on an oil and gas career for a five year tenure with Gulf Oil Corporation (1951-1956) in their Land and Exploration department before becoming an active independent in 1956. As an independent he worked many of the major hydrocarbon basins in the U. S., including the Permian Basin, Texas Gulf Coast, East Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, the Rocky Mountain Region, California and Alaska. He had offices in Denver, Midland and Houston and notable discoveries of the Moore-Sams Field in Louisiana, Indian Hills Field in North Dakota and Sand Dunes Field in Wyoming among others. In addition, he had international experience which included two concessions in Somalia and one in the Sudanese Red Sea. During his career, he has owned and managed a cable tool company, a pipeline company and an oil and gas holding company. He has owned an auto dealership, a newspaper and has been active in real estate including ranches in Colorado and Texas. Perkins had many interests and in the pursuit of these interests always demanded the best, as Midlanders who knew his garden can attest. He assembled and collected the largest private collection of Gems and Minerals in the world. The Ann and Perkins Sams Gem and Mineral Collection which is housed in the Museum of Natural Science in Houston and is considered the best collection in the world. He was a fantastic cook and a great storyteller. He was an avid hunter and fisherman but also a conservationist which is noted by his management of his Taylor River property in Colorado and his service on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. Most recently, he created the Pecos River Resolution Corporation, a nonprofit created to study the river, determine its best use and resolve what is needed to accomplish that mission. Perkins was preceded in death by his parents Murray and Genevieve Sams, his first wife Elizabeth Bradley Sams, his daughter Elizabeth Sams, his brother Francis Sams and a grandson, John Perkins Foretich. He is survived by his wife of thirty years Ann Bronston Sams; his brother Murray Sams of Deland, Florida; his son, Lourcey Sams and wife, Lisa Sams of Midland, Texas, and their children, Malone Sams, Hilory Davis and Hunter Davis; his son, Roe Sams and wife, Terri Sams of Midland, Texas and their children, Jason Roe Williamson, Lauren Sams and Brooke Sams; his daughter, Sarah Sams of Melbourne Beach, Florida and her son, Russell Smith; his step son Benjamin Bronston of San Juan California; his step daughter Julie Chase and husband, Stuart Chase of Lanesborough, Massachusetts and their daughter, Eliza Chase and a great granddaughter, Libby Thomas. Perkins and Anne

Although we lost touch, my father was Cpt John Young of Princess cruises and you were incredible friends of our family, I will always remember that incredible holiday when we visited you in your home and the tour of your offices. What an incredible life. What an incredible legacy.

My deep sympathy for the family and for others who loved this remarkable man who sprang from deep, uncommon roots along the subtropical St. Johns River and blazed his own rich path through life to settle and prosper in the grassy Texas flatlands north of the Pecos River.

The silence of his gravely, melodious voice, and the end of his entertaining repertoire of stories leaves the world a poorer place.

I wish I had known him better.

Perkins' voice was unforgettable. As a ten-year-old learning how to fly fish as Perkins was watching, his voice could be quite intimidating. However, he could add a slight, yet noticeable, softness to it, and then you knew everything was ok, and he was about to start helping you get out of the mess...

Perkins knew how to enjoy life--as much as anyone I have ever met. I like to remember him holding court at the end of the dining room table in Gunnison. The table was arranged with great care (Ann's talents, not Perkins). The food was prepared with distinction. And, most importantly, the family and friends Perkins brought to the table, were exceptional people for whom he cared greatly.

After one of these dinners, my sister and I taught Justice Byron White how to "moon walk" Michael Jackson-style. Perkins enjoyed watching, but was definitely planted in his seat and not about to try it...

It is unique people like Perkins who make our lives so interesting and full. Thank you Perkins for the many memories you have given me and my family. For whatever time we have left on this side of eternity, you will be missed by many. But, when our time comes, I will be looking you up as you will have found the best fishing spots already and I still need someone to show me how to fish with a wet fly (since you wouldn't let anyone use one at your place)...

Perkins, God bless you and your family.

Perkins' taught me how to fly fish and he taught me how to read the water, which he always insisted was the most important part of the endeavor. I had some of the best experiences of my life on the Taylor River due to the generosity and friendship of Perkins and Ann Sams. I will always remember Perkins, especially his gruff voice tempered by the quick smile, and miss him. My condolences for your loss.

I am genuinely sad for your loss. I had the fortune to work with Perkins' brother for several years and remember how fondly he always spoke of Perkins and his adventures.
