\r\n\r\n\r\nAs Elly May, she seemed blissfully unaware of her status as a bumpkin blond bombshell. Typically she was clad in a snug flannel shirt and tight jeans cinched with a rope belt, and she seemed to prefer her critters to any beau.

\r\n\r\nChosen from more than 500 other actresses, Douglas said she felt at ease playing the role because, like her character, she grew up a poor Southern tomboy. Her childhood in Pride, Louisiana, came in handy when she was asked during her audition to milk a goat.

\r\n\r\n\"I had milked cows before,\" she recalled in a 2009 interview with The Associated Press. \"I figured they were equipped the same, so I just went on over and did it.\"

\r\n\r\nThe show was not only assailed by critics, but by the network boss who put it on the air: \"I HATED it,\" Michael Dann confided much later. \"After screening the pilot, I don't think I ever watched another segment.\"

\r\n\r\nThe public, however, felt quite the opposite: It ran for nine seasons, often in the Top 10. In their own way, the Clampetts were a forerunner of the '60s counterculture.

\r\n\r\nIt wasn't much of a stretch for Douglas to fit into the troupe, said Smith, the niece.

\r\n\r\n\"She was always happy, and she really loved animals - just like her character on 'The Beverly Hillbillies.' She was a wonderful lady, a very good Christian lady.\"

\r\n\r\nIndeed, when Douglas gave her autograph, she included a biblical verse (\"Trust in the Lord with all your heart...\"), according to Baton Rouge TV station WAFB.

\r\n\r\nDouglas' career began with beauty pageants - she was Miss Baton Rouge and Miss New Orleans - followed by a trip to New York to pursue a career in entertainment.

\r\n\r\n\"That was the first time I had ever been on an airplane,\" Douglas said.

\r\n\r\nWhile modeling didn't appeal to her - \"I didn't want to be that skinny\" - television did. Douglas was featured as the Letters Girl on \"The Perry Como Show\" in 1957 and as the Billboard Girl on \"The Steve Allen Show\" in 1959.

\r\n\r\nShe landed a featured role in the 1959 film \"Career,\" starring Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine, and a bit part in the film musical \"Li'l Abner.\" She also had a small role as Tony Randall's secretary in the 1961 romantic comedy \"Lover Come Back\" with Rock Hudson and Doris Day.

\r\n\r\nDouglas starred in one of the most memorable episodes of Rod Serling's \"The Twilight Zone\" - titled \"Eye of the Beholder,\" it was the one in which her head is wrapped in bandages for most of the half-hour after plastic surgery aimed at fixing her \"ugliness,\" which in fact was beauty in a universe of monsters. And she starred opposite Elvis Presley in the 1966 movie \"Frankie and Johnny.\"

\r\n\r\nAfter \"The Beverly Hillbillies,\" Douglas worked in real estate, recorded country and gospel music albums and wrote a book for children that drew on biblical themes.

\r\n\r\nIn 2010 she sued CBS and toymaker Mattel over a Barbie doll that used Elly May's name and likeness. The suit was settled in 2011.

\r\n\r\nShe said she never minded being typecast as her \"Hillbillies\" character.

\r\n\r\n\"So many kinds of people relate to Elly May,\" Douglas said. \"So many people love her, and that means a lot to me.\"

\r\n\r\nDouglas was married twice, to Roland John Bourgeois Jr. until 1954, and then to The Beverly Hillbillies director Robert M. Leeds. They divorced in 1980 after nine years of marriage. Survivors include her son, Danny P. Bourgeois.

She was a graduate of Capitol Hill High School and The University of Oklahoma. She started her career in the fashion industry at Kerr's in both Norman and Oklahoma City. Her career took her to the Neusteter's Department Store in Denver, Colorado, and later Denver Dry Department Store as the head of the haute couture department. Her time there took her to the top fashion designer houses in Milan, Italy; and Paris, France. She often attended Fashion Week in New York City. After working in haute couture for others, Donna opened her own designer boutique, image-west, ltd., in Larimer Square. Donna was always involved in the community in which she lived. She served as the Regional Director of Fashion Group International Denver as well as volunteering with the Juvenile Diabetes Association and Big Sisters. After retirement, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where, because of her love of opera, she was active in the Santa Fe Opera Guild helping with their education and fund-raising efforts. SALEM - Donna Kathleen (Rooney) Douglas, age 82, died on November 2, 2014 at Tierra Rose Care Facility in Salem, Oregon. She passed away in the company of her loving family.

Donna was born on August 29, 1932 in Los Angeles, California to Donald and Clara (Earnest) Rooney. She was the youngest of five children. She lived in the Los Angeles area into her mid-twenties.

Donna graduated high school from St. Mary's Academy in Los Angeles in 1950. After high school, Donna worked in clerical and administrative positions for several insurance companies in downtown Los Angeles. In 1952, she was accepted into a nursing program at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing (Arcadia, California) and graduated with a Diploma in Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1955.

After graduation from nursing school, Donna went to work at St. Francis Hospital in Lynwood, California. She married Darrel Douglas in 1955 and continued her nursing career at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital in Glendale, California. In 1956, she left nursing to start a family. Donna and Darrel moved to Seattle, Washington in 1957 and, with a growing family, to Portland, Oregon in 1961. Donna spent the next 16 years raising five children and running a busy household. Her free time was often spent volunteering for a number of Christian charities.

In 1974, the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico, where Donna developed an appreciation for the Native American cultures. She was a frequent visitor to the northern New Mexico pueblos (notably Taos, San Ildefonso and Santo Domingo.) After the Douglas family moved back to Oregon - and settled in West Salem - in 1978, Donna took a position as a catalogue clerk in the library of the Willamette University School of Law. She enjoyed her duties and took particular pleasure in interacting with the law school students. During this time, Donna and Darrel hosted several foreign exchange students who were studying at the university. She retired from Willamette University in 1996.

Donna enjoyed many outdoor activities including hiking, camping and gardening. Along with Darrel, she was an avid bird watcher and traveled all over the Northwest to view different species. While she claimed to be shy and reserved, she had a clever wit and quick smile. She was a marvelous hostess and a nurturing soul to those in need. Donna was active in the religious community wherever she lived, including the past 35 years at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem. She participated in services as well as volunteered with a number of church-sponsored outreach programs, notably the Young Ladies' Institute (YLI), which engages in many charitable activities. She was also involved in the Salem Area Garden Club.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel, her parents and her siblings Joseph, George and Dorothy. Donna is survived by her brother John (Jean) and her sister-in-law Florence Rooney, as well as her children, David (Sheila), Daniel (Mary), Diana Ewoldt (Mark), Dennis (Brenda) and Drea, her grandchildren, Molly, John, Earl, Steven, James, Katherine, Andrew and Mackenzie, and many nieces and nephews. She was greatly loved and is dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on November 14, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem, Oregon at 1:30 p.m. Following will be a reception in the parish hall and then an inurnment ceremony at City View Cemetery, in Salem, Oregon. The family has designated the following organizations for memorial contributions: The Willamette Valley Hospice, http://wvh.org/), and the Alzheimer's Network of Oregon ( http://alznet.org/)
