Carolyn Neville
Carolyn Neville, 96, longtime resident of Madison, CT, passed away on April 6th, 2023. She was born in Williamstown, MA, and graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where she met and married Edward Neville.
She leaves three children: Sally Herring and husband Michael, Clark Neville and wife Kathy, and Laurel Yearsly. She was a homemaker and a warm, loving mom, who devoted herself to her family. She always had a ready smile and a great sense of humor, especially for silly rhymes and plays on words. She liked poetry; Robert Frost was one of her favorite poets. She was always there for her children when they came home after school, read to them, and made special meals when they were sick. She always made time to play card games. One of our favorite family times was to set up a board game on the dining room table. She gave each of her children "pet" names, which she used even when they were adults.
Sewing and knitting were some of her favorite activities. She made clothes for herself and kids, prom dresses, and doll clothes. She loved doing all kinds of crafts with her daughters and was always ready to visit a craft show. She joined a craft group called Border Arts in Madison and became close friends with the members. She loved to bake cookies and cakes. With her degree in Library Science, she volunteered at various school and town libraries. She was a volunteer Girl Scout leader for several badges. She enjoyed gardening (and weeding!) and joined the Windermere gardening group. In her 70s, she learned to use a computer for the first time and produced minutes and other documents for the Windermere Homeowners Board of Directors, serving as a secretary for several years. She was a member of the Madison Congregational Church and served on the Women's League and the newsletter.
After her husband's retirement, they traveled frequently, including within New England, out West, and Alaska until his death. They enjoyed numerous Elder Hostel bus trips.
She was a quiet, soft-spoken, warm, loving, and fun person with an interest in new things. We were blessed to have her as a mom. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the caring staff at Portland Care and Rehabilitation for their attention to our mother and upbeat attitude. Truly, a wonderful, special place.
