Dr. James Gray Kallam Sr.DecaturDr. James Gray Kallam Sr., of Decatur went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on February 1, 2014. He was born October 27, 1926, in Clingman, N.C. He is preceded in death by his parents, George Harrison Kallam Sr. and Araleigh Calloway Kallam; brother, Harry; sister, Ann. He is survived by Gerry, his loving wife of 65 years; children, Jimmy Kallam (Suzi), Tim Kallam (Christi) and Beth Ellsworth (Bruce); seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Jim served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had six earned academic degrees, including a Ph.D from NYU. He had a varied career, which included positions as college professor, college president, pastor and administrator of a missionary agency. He was a gifted vocalist who primarily used his voice to praise God.With all his many accomplishments, Jim was a humble man who above all loved God and his family. The legacy of his godly life lives on through his family and the many students he influenced.A memorial service will be held at The Church at Charlotte, 2500 Carmel Road, Charlotte, N.C. on February 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. with visitation to follow.Because of Jim's lifelong interest in and devotion to the global ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the family requests that any donations be made to the missionary funds of The Church at Charlotte, Charlotte, N.C, First Bible Church, Decatur or Mountain Brook Community Church, Birmingham.Guestbook available at www.sheltonfuneralhome.net.This obituary was originally published in the Decatur Daily.
