Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home - Columbia Obituary

Joe Dayton Duncan, Sr., 75, retired employee of Columbia Gas Systems and resident of Old State Road in Hampshire, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Life Care Center of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Randy Baxter officiating. Burial will follow in Worley Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Cathey's Creek Church of Christ Building Fund, c/o Steve Riley, 4966 Whiteside Road, Hampshire, TN 38461. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Robert Ewing Duncan, Sr. and the late Alice Josephine Morrow Duncan. He was a graduate of Hampshire High School. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1962 – 1968. Mr. Duncan served on the Maury County Commission from 1998 – 2006. He was a private pilot and was Chairman of Maury County Airport Authority. He was a member of Cathey's Creek Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife whom he married March 6, 1970, Rebecca Jones Duncan of Hampshire; son, Joe (Joannie) Duncan, II of Hohenwald; grandchildren, Amber (Tim) Warren, Caleb Duncan, Jacob Duncan, Lucas Duncan; sisters, Bobbie Harmon of Columbia, Sue Hurt of Michigan; brothers, R. E. Duncan, Jr. of Hickman County, Donald Duncan of Columbia, Ronald Duncan of Columbia; sister-in-law, Era Pryne Pruitt of Mt. Pleasant; and brothers-in-law, Jonathan (Marti) Jones, Mark (Nancy) Jones, and Luke Jones, all of Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Duncan; and sister, Dorothy Armstrong, Betsy Goodwin, and Jackie Dugger. Honorary pallbearers will include Gene Ray Baxter, Dr. Paul Perryman, and Dr. James Marshall.
