“I was a new professor at Sweet Briar in 1982 when I met Maxine. She was always a wonderfully charming, witty, and intelligent woman and I remember her fondly, even after all these years.
“I didn't know Ms. Garner, but when my father, Reece Jones, died in 1998, we were standing in the parking lot at Loflin's Funeral Home and she came over to talk with us. She and my father had gone to school at Liberty together. She told us that she remembered him because in first grade, he had taught her to tie her shoes.
When I read her obituary, I had to smile at the list of places she had taught, but she still remembered that fact about my father.
