“I just learned that Mel had died this morning. Even though I hadn't seen Mel in several years, a lifetime friend and influence is gone. My years working for him in Alameda County were exciting, chaotic, inspiring, taxing, sometimes hilarious, and rewarding. My sympathies to Jeanne and his children.
“I am sorry to hear about your loss. Mel was a kind and compassionate father who was always on the soccer field cheering for us. My deepest sympathies are with you and your family.
“I just learned that Mel Hing has passed away and want to express my sincere condolences to his family and friends. Mel played a big role in my introduction to the nuts and bolts of county governing. We went toe to toe on issues of policy and politics; I always walked away from our exchanges the wiser. His sharp intellect and wit made an indelible mark on Alameda County.
“My very sincere condolences to Jeanne and all of Mel's family. Mel was my 'big boss' as I entered Sacramento County government in 1975 and after my 35 years of County service I can truly say I was honored to have known and worked him. When he left Sacramento for Alameda County it was one of the biggest losses for the citizens of Sacramento County. And a huge gain for Alameda. Thank you, Mel.
“I had the pleasure of working with Mel when he was the President of the Montclair Elementary School PTA. He taught me many things that prepared me for my volunteer career with the Red Cross and the City of Oakland.
Our prayers are with Jeanne and the entire family.
“My wife Patricia and I had the pleasure of spending time with Mel and Jeanne at A's games and with our good friends who knew Mel for many years. Mel was truly one of the nicest people I've met, and we will miss his conversation, kindness, and wonderful smile.
“Mel was a good friend, a mentor, and a leader. I enjoyed working with him - I send my condolences to Jeanne, Kevin, and family.
With sympathy, Darlene Smith
“Mel was a great man and will be truly missed. My deepest sympathies to his family.
“Toward the end of my service to Alameda County I worked with Jeanne and I wanted to send her and the Hing Family my condolences at this time.
