Sam had the most marvelous garden in Guilford, not just for what was growing in it, but for the tomato stakes and assorted poles and supports he had decorated for the vegetables. I wear a pin he gave me of a soda can pull tab, gold leafed with a point and an earring back which he referred to as "hermaphrodite amulets" from his Splendors of the Sohoites. Sam was such a gifted artist from his elegant wood and glass pieces to his whimsical Painted sticks. Back in the 1970s, he anonymously supported a new environmental organization, inform, which we built into a leading voice for corporate responsibility and industry pollution prevention. For many years, Sam was a dear friend of both me and my artist, husband, Saul, Lambert, Sam, and Saul exchanged, hilarious bits of art over many years which I treasure.
