Mr. Spring was indeed an inspiring lecturer and teacher, as mentioned in his obituary. As a student at UMM in its first years (1960-64) I signed up for every English course of his I saw offered—not because I needed the course in many cases, but because I found his classes so intellectually stimulating. He had a keen appreciation for literature, a lively wit, and a remarkable ability to make the world of the Augustans, the Romantics, Shakespeare, or poets of any age come alive.
