Just after sunrise on the first day of autumn, September 22, 2009, Wallace Stanhope Dunn, Jr., "June", stepped onto his new home golf course and hit his first drive of the day. He was in Heaven. A top amateur golfer in the 1950's, June held club champion titles at three NC golf courses; Carolina Country Club, Raleigh Country Club, and Forsyth Country Club. In addition, he played and worked with Arnold Palmer while Arnold attended Wake Forest College. During the ensuing years, he found great pleasure playing golf with his buddies, his wife, Emilie, and especially his son, Frank. Wagering a friendly bet meant he often left the course with a little more pocket change than before he arrived. June loved sports of all kinds and he developed an encyclopedic knowledge of teams, players, coaches, and statistics. He never met a stranger and could tell a joke with perfect timing, often to gales of laughter. A man who loved his family, especially his precious Emilie, his heart grew bigger with each addition. Together he and Emilie had two sons, one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. His friends were numerous and lived all across NC and in several southern states. He and Emilie raised their sons in Raleigh, where June owned and operated Oak City Laundry and Dry Cleaners. During their retirement years, June and Emilie moved to Wrightsville Beach, NC. They were members of Wrightsville United Methodist Church. June was born in Raleigh, NC, in 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Stanhope Dunn, who preceded him in death. A graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Orange, VA, June attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is also preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Emilie Hunt Dunn, and son, Wallace Stanhope Dunn, III, "Skeeter." He is survived by his devoted son, Frank Harlowe Dunn and wife Nancy of Wilmington; his loving granddaughter, Amanda Dunn Selvidge, and husband Darren and their two children, Tanner and Emilie of Springfield, MO. Also surviving is his brother, Frank Edward Dunn and wife Pat of Wilmington; and numerous adoring nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves behind his special friends, Lillian Cullum of Augusta, GA, and Jim Rowland of Columbia, SC. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 25, 2009, at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington, with The Rev. John C. Drewry, Jr. officiating. Music will be provided by Darren Selvidge. After the service, the family will receive friends at 17W. Henderson Street, Wrightsville Beach, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of one's choice.
