Rita Eleanor Glen (nee Powell) passed away peacefully on June 15, 2013 at Wexford Creek (Good Samaritan Society) at the age of 93.
Rita lived a happy early life in Powell River with her parents, Alfred and Jane Auton Powell and her brother Tommy, with whom she was very close. After her marriage to Rod Glen, the couple settled in Nanaimo. They were longtime, proud residents of Harewood and were very active in community affairs. Sadly predeceased by Rod in 1980, Rita continued to lead an active, healthy, and independent life . She enjoyed travel, gardening, bowling, cards and dominoes, movies and the company of her family and many friends. She was known for her kindness and generosity, interest in others, good humour and unfailing positive attitude. She was able to live in her own home in Harewood, as she wished, until very recently, thanks to the wonderful support of her dear friends, Rita and Emil Sorensen and her very kind neighbours, Michael and Carolyn Davies and Wendy Thaell. We are also grateful to mum's homemaker Roseanne, Meals on Wheels and other support staff from Home and Community Services. She leaves behind her daughters Adrienne and Allison, sons-in-law Jack Duke and Tim DuFeu , dear grandsons John Kingdon and Corin MacKinlay and his wife Lianne, and beloved great-granddaughter Emilie MacKinlay. She will also be missed by her step-granddaughter Andrea Duke and great grandchildren, Georgia and Carson. She is fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Jean Powell and her niece and nephews, Susan, Tom and Doug (Helen) Powell. She was predeceased by her step-brother, Frank Bridge but will be remembered fondly by Verna and family. Also very close friends Rita and Emil Sorensen, honorary granddaughter Phia Proctor (Simon), and her devoted friend, Kay Spence. Rita enjoyed many Christmases and family celebrations with Kala , Cammi and Don MacKinlay, Christie and Callan. She will be greatly missed by all. Special thanks to Dr. D. Uchman and the kind staff at Nanaimo Hospital. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the amazing staff at Wexford Creek for the wonderful care, kindness and compassion shown to Rita and family during her time there. You are the best!
No funeral by request but a Celebration of Life will be held in August. Announcement will follow. Donations in Rita's memory may be made to the Colliery Dam Preservation Society http://www.savecollierydam.org/) (a cause close to Rita's heart, especially since her late husband Rod very involved in establishing the park and swimming area) or the Good Samaritan Society (https://www.gss.org/make-a-donation/).
