Charles R. Sereno Obituary
Sereno, Charles R. Age 82 and a resident of Naperville since 1957, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 24, 2013. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 3, 1931. Charles is survived by his former wife, Rena Bianucci Sereno; his six children, Martin Sereno (with Claudia Fernety), Paul Sereno, Joan Sereno (with Allard Jongman), Margaret Sereno, Anne Sereno (with Sylvain Laroche), and Sara Sereno; his seven grandchildren, Katrina, Mark, Thomas, Robert, Vincent, Ava, and Arlo; and his sister, Marilyn Arado. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Catherine; and his brother, Walter. Charles was born to the late Alfred Sereno and the late Mary Gonsalves in Honolulu, Hawaii. Charles graduated from Saint Louis School in Honolulu and worked a short while at the Catholic Worker in New York City. He enrolled at the University of Notre Dame, left prior to graduation to work, marry and start a family, and completed a B.A. degree in English from DePaul University. Charles worked for years as a civil engineer in California and Illinois and finally as a mail carrier in Naperville. He was an avid follower of horse racing at Chicagoland's tracks. He was passionate about education, peace, social justice, and his family, and he had a deep appreciation of nature. He was a wide-ranging scholar, fluent in the humanities and natural sciences and abreast of current controversies in archaeology, art, astronomy, history, paleontology, psycholinguistics, psychology, language evolution and acquisition, and neuroscience, as well as politics, the economy, currencies, and financial markets. With an aim to jump-start reading in pre-school years, he developed a novel and intuitive script based on the articulatory position of the sounds of language. He was a poet, an avid experimenter, an enthusiastic blogger, and keen toy and game maker, creating wood pull toys, miniature wood-block castles and trebuchets, ride-able backhoe diggers, a horse racing board game, a 30-foot seesaw, and a 75-foot aerial tramway. He was facile with a range of materials, building Minoan-motif sidewalks, terraces and a patio as well as bookcases, rolling easels, workbenches, saw-horses, and stools. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for a bench in his honor on the Naperville Riverwalk. Please send your donation to the Riverwalk Foundation, 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville, IL 60540 or call (630)305-5984. Visitation for Charles Sereno will be on Saturday, December 7, from 2:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Naperville. Interment will be private.
