Thomas Liley Obituary
Liley, Thomas A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, January 27 for Thomas Liley, who passed away January 22, 2013 in Naperville. Dr. Liley was born in Topeka, Kansas and later served as a member of the U. S. Navy Band in Washington, DC. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Music in Saxophone with Distinction by Indiana University, where he studied with the internationally renowned virtuoso Eugene Rousseau. In addition to his position as Professor of Music at Joliet Junior College, Dr. Liley served as a Guest Professor of Saxophone at Indiana University, the University of Minnesota, Kansas State University, and the University of Iowa. He was a faculty member of the Shell Lake Arts Center in Wisconsin each summer. As a performer and lecturer he traveled throughout the United States and in Canada, China, Eastern Europe, Hong Kong and Thailand. He was a charter member of the World Saxophone Congress and served on the Comité International de Saxophone. Dr. Liley has long been involved with the North American Saxophone Alliance and was a member of the Executive Board, serving as Director of Scholarly Publications. In addition to his work as a performer, teacher and lecturer, Dr. Liley authored books on several topics relating to the saxophone. His most recent book, Eugene Rousseau: With Casual Brilliance, was published in 2011. Dr. Liley is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter, Noel Harmon and his sister, Patricia Pearce. Visitation will be at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St, Naperville, from 2:00 until 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 27, with a Memorial Service at 3:00 PM.
