Joan Canning Obituary

Joan Meredith Hill Canning

Naples, FL

Joan Meredith Hill Canning, 75, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 30, 2012, after a short battle with cancer.

Joan was born in Lower Economy, Nova Scotia on December 28, 1936. She earned her undergraduate degree from McGill University in 1956 and masters in library science from the same institution in 1959. She began her decades-long year career as a business librarian working for Aluminum Carbide in Montreal. In 1962, she married and emigrated to New York City where she would live until 2000. She began to work for the Brooklyn Public Business Library in the mid-1960s and by the mid-1990s she was the Business Librarian (head of the library). Her work in business library science was nationally admired-she was invited to teach business library classes at Pratt University, published multiple volumes on the subject in the 1980s and 1990s, and was a key member of the Special Libraries Association. She also served on the board of the Visiting Nurses Association in Brooklyn, NY, and was a tireless member and also president of the Parents Association of her children's school, St. Ann's.

In recent years she focused her prodigious energies on her grandchildrennever missing a birthday, concert, or game. She also served as a member of the Beauville Property Owners' Association here in Naples. Retirement also allowed her to pursue her life-long love of reading, something which she was keen to pass on to her grandchildren. Her last Christmas gifts to them in 2011 were Kindles. In May 2012 she and her husband were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in their favorite city, Paris, France.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty years, Thomas Mark Canning of Naples, FL; her daughter, Charlotte Mary Canning and husband, Frederic Schwentker of Austin, TX; and son, Andrew Hill Canning and wife, Michelle Marie Miller of Yonkers, NY; her two grandchildren, Frances Rose Canning Schwentker and Theodore Miller Canning. She is also survived by her sister, Judith Hill DuClos of Economy, Nova Scotia.

The family will hold a viewing on Friday, August 3, 2012, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples, FL 34109.

A celebration of her life is being planned for the fall.
