Mary Torrence Hood
Columbus, OH
Naples, FL
Mary Torrence Hood, 90, of Columbus, OH and Naples, FL, passed away in her home at Moorings Park in Naples on December 21, 2012. Mary was born in Boston, MA on June 24, 1922 to parents, P. J. Hawkins of Galway, Ireland and Catherine Burke of County Cork, Ireland, who immigrated to Boston in the early 1900s.
Mary began her career as an airline hostess and was selected to work the first transcontinental flight for TWA. She met the father of her children, John F. Torrence, on a flight and moved to Chester, IL after they married. She raised her children in Columbus, OH, which she called home for the last 56 years of her life. Mary was a volunteer in her community and church, and an avid tennis player and golfer (playing 36 holes with her son, Jack, just days before she died). Mary was active and cheerful to the very end. She enjoyed organizing social events even hosting a luncheon for her friends the day she died!
Mary was a long time member of Scioto Country Club in Columbus and a member of Royal Poinsettia in Naples. When she wasn't playing sports, she was cheering on her favorite teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes where she was a member of the President's Club, the Boston Red Sox, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Mary brought laughter, fun and enthusiasm to her many lifelong friends. She was described by her friends as anything from "remarkable" to being a "live wire."
She is survived by five children, Kathy Rohrbaugh, Jack Torrence, Jeff Torrence, Margaret Steen, and Patrick Torrence; 15 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Terre Leahy and Helen Scott.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Lee Wears and Charles Hood.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 in the Bower Chapel at Moorings Park.

Mary was a super friend and wonderful person. Her excellent and fun nature was loved at Scioto over the many years she graced the club. Here kids carry on her delightful spirit. Nan will especially miss her. Our love to the kids and grandkids-- she will be greatly missed by all of us..

Mary touched people's lives and made each person individually feel special and loved. One of my most favorite memories was when the entire Torrence family traveled to Ireland together with Mary. Despite the clouds and rain Mary would don her sunglasses and with her brilliant Irish eyes smiling would "will" the sun to shine...need I say the sun would shine indeed. I will miss her dearly and will cherish every single moment I was blessed to spend with her.
