Arnold Magnuson, Jr. Estero, FL 7/1/1931 to 11/1/2013

Arnold Magnuson, 82, of Estero, FL and Grand Rapids, MI, died suddenly on Friday, November 1st, 2013.

He was the first of four sons born to the late Arnold Sr. (Jerry) and Clara Belle (Sally) Magnuson. Arnie, as he was called by his many friends, began his extensive education at the one-room Red Brick schoolhouse in Grand Rapids. He attended Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids, MI and in 1952, after graduating, he served his country during the Korean War on the USS Valley Forge CV-45.

After returning home he studied pre-law at Western Michigan University and graduated in 1957. Throughout his life Arnie had performed in many local and regional playhouses including Theatre in the Round at the Rowe Hotel, The Players in Detroit and the Grosse Point Theatre. In 1963 he earned his law degree from the Michigan State University College of Law and started his career as an attorney at Alexander, Buchannan & Conklin. After only four years, he became a partner. He then went on to form the law firm of Reynolds, Beebe & Magnuson. Arnold was a highly respected and successful trial attorney in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties in the Detroit area for 36 years and a member of the Michigan Bar Association for over 50 years. He was a member of the Detroit Yacht Club and enjoyed boating on the Great Lakes for many years.

After retiring to Florida in 2000, Arnold became active in his community by volunteering at the Fort Myers Police Department as a family advocate and as a boat tour operator with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples. Arnie also worked at the Cocohatchie Nature Center and most recently was the notoriously entertaining shuttle driver at Coconut Point in Bonita Springs Florida.

He was the much loved husband of Carol Magnuson of Estero, FL and London, England for over 30 years. He will be remembered by two brothers, Robert Magnuson of Grand Rapids, MI and Scott Magnuson of Lake Norman, NC, and had one deceased brother, Jim Magnuson of Rochester, NY. Arnold had four children with his former spouse, Alice J. Mason of Sylva, NC and Grand Rapids, MI: Laura Marie Lenihan of Taylor, MI, Elizabeth Mason of Waynesville, NC, Arnold N. Magnuson III of Norfolk, VA, and Erik A Magnuson of Orlando, FL. He was also a dad to Carol's children, Janette Holzhaus of Ypsilanti, MI, and Stephen and Ian Ford of Escanaba, MI. Arnie was a proud grandpa to eleven grandchildren: Matthew and Colleen, James and Caitlin, Carrie Anne, Nathaniel, Jacob and Joshua, Adam, Rebecca, and Sara. He also had five greatgrandchildren, Connor and Kadie, Michael and Adrianna, and Angelina Grace.

Arnold was best known and loved for his comical and sometimes outlandish sense of humor and love of practical jokes and general mischief. He loved keeping an audience entertained with a good story, impromptu songs or the history of obscure facts. He was a generous and loving friend, father, husband, son and brother. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

A memorial service is planned for Spring 2014 in Grand Rapids, MI, where he will rest in peace near his mother and father.
