John Cipolla Obituary

John Louis Cipolla Naples, FL

John Louis Cipolla, 87, a great man, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2012 in his home in Naples, FL.

Known simply as "Pop Pop," John Louis Cipolla was born on November 18, 1924 in Clifton Heights, PA to Italian immigrants Pasquale and Concetta Cipolla, and was a Naples resident for more than 40 years.

John is best described as an ordinary person who bore witness to extraordinary events. Growing up in Ardmore, PA, John survived the trials and tribulations of the Great Depression and routinely offered stories of how his father, who worked as a pasta maker, single handed fed the entire neighborhood with generous donations of the spaghetti he would bring home to feed his own family.

John could not realize that the time he spent with an uncle experimenting with amateur radio could land him, after enlisting at the age of 18, the position of being General George Patton's "radio man" during the Second World War. John was credited with intercepting and translating a message that ultimately saved the capital city of Luxembourg from being bombed.

Honorably Discharged on November 1, 1945, his war accolades include being ceremoniously decorated with The European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Five Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and The American Theater Service Medal.

Described as a "Captain of the Carpet Industry," John opened the Cipolla Rug Company in Broomall, PA shortly after the war and has been credited with inventing many of the carpet installing and cleaning practices widely used today.

Also dabbling in the hotel business, John established The Lamp Post Motel on the Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ and, splitting time between the Philadelphia area and a home in Fort Lauderdale, a visit to Naples led him to purchase The Anchorage Motel in Old Naples in 1971, which he operated for 14 years.

Seeing the potential of buying and selling real estate in Southwest Florida early, John became a broker in Naples and was a member of the Naples Area Board of Realtors for many years.

His love of boating and fishing could only be surpassed by his passion for mastering the game of golf. John introduced the game to many people who credit him for making the game a lifelong sport. However, in his eyes, there was no time better spent than simply being in the company of his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his children, John (Kristin) Cipolla, Dr. Leslie (Robert) Ricciardelli, Victoria Wadsworth, Timothy Brown; and his nine grand children, Tyler, Joshua, David, Austin, Jessica, Johnny Mac, Kyle, Lexi, and Kalee. He is also survived by his brother, Steve (Nancy) Cipolla, and their children, Debbie and Steve.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3rd at Hodges Chapel at Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 111th Avenue North, Naples, where services will follow at 3:00 p.m.

My Thoughts and Prayers are with all of the Family and Friends Today as We All say Goodbye to a True Gentleman, John Cipolla. I have had both the Pleasure and Blessing in My Life of knowing John since I was a young teenager. John was Dad to My Life Long Friend, Tim.
I was just thinking of the days that I would go over to The Anchorage Motel, which John owned and managed in Downtown Naples. John was normally busy doing different projects around the motel but he would always take time out to stop and talk to me. He usually had a funny story to tell and he was always genuinely interested in what was going on in my life. I cannot remember ever seeing him without a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. I also remember that after my friend, Tim, went away to military school, that I would stop in occasionally to see John and the rest of the family and He still treated me exactley the same no matter how much time had passed between visits.
John had a nickname. It was "Pop Pop" and thats what he was known as by all of the kids that came to know Him. And now that I think of it, there has never been a person that I have known in my lifetime that fit that name more appropietely. "Pop Pop", You are Loved By Many and Will Be Missed By All That Ever Knew You! Thank You for All of The Kindness that You Brought into this World. Rest In Peace My Friend....I'll See You On The Other Side!

One of our favorite things about visiting Naples was knowing that we would get to spend time with PopPop. We would listen to his stories (usually the same ones over and over) and laugh because no one told a story like him. He would sneak the boys out to the Donut shop in the morning and take them to the Dairy Queen every night. He would sit by the pool for hours and watch them swim and smile because they were enjoying themselves. He would hand them a dollar every time we went to the pier to get an ice cream. If I said no they would run to PopPop who always said yes. He was the best father-in-law, grandfather, and friend. He was patient, kind and loving. He will be missed more than words can express.

Leslie, now so many know one of the reasons you are such an amazing leader and person to know! I enjoyed reading about your father's legacy, and surprisingly share many of your background experiences. I especially loved the picture of of him with a curly haired blonde little girl, (whom I guess is you?), on a large, old fashioned bicycle. The shot of the two of you dancing at your wedding is also so touching. It's obvious he was an outstanding father! How blessed you are to have had him!

Having also lost my father, I understand the pain. But he isn't really lost, because he is there in your memories and the special moments you shared. Those never fade. Now you can see him in the smiles of your daughter. He will eternally be young and vibrant. And every so often you'll feel him looking over your shoulder guiding you, just as he has always done. Celebrate his life. L'Chaim. (To Life)

I will never forget the times that I was lucky enough to spend with John Louis Cipolla. He taught me about "leverage" for sure - but I am most THANKFUL for him teaching me what it takes to be a real man - which he did mostly by example. I will most miss our talks at breakfast and our driving around Naples where he filled my imagination with visions of things the way they were and things the way they should be. I am proud to be your "son" in law Pop Pop and will miss you dearly.

What an amazing man Pop Pop was, great American patriot, wonderful human being. We are so honored to have known him. We remember how he enjoyed Halloween at Johnny & Kristin's, sitting with all his family just watching the grandkids have fun or Easter, watching them look for eggs. He lived in the moment, fully absorbing it all. God bless the family and friends of this honorable man as they grieve for him. Love, Jen, Hank & Dylan Rodkin

We are so broken-hearted at the loss of our "partner in grandparent crime," Pop Pop. He was the epitome of a grandparent, and we shall miss seeing his smiling face. He raised some beautiful children, and his grandchildren were never in doubt as to how much he loved them. Pop Pop, you have left a deep and heavy impression on me, Billy, Geno, and Grandma Hopie. It will be such a happy reunion when we are all together again. In the meantime, please know that we will always carry your memory when we are with your family so they will always feel you near. Rest in peace, my dear friend. May God hold you strong in His arms and bring you comfort. We love you very much.
