Samuel Kandel
Naples, FL
Sam Kandel had a very rich and full life. Growing up in New York, the son of a taxi driver father and having a mother who was riddled with crippling arthritis who he had to take care of, he never complained. He always looked at challenges as opportunities.
Always an excellent student, his educational path was interrupted by the war. He served in the Army from March 1943 through January 1946. He received the American service medal, European and African middle eastern service medal, good conduct medal, World War II victory medal, and recommendation for the bronze star medal and purple heart. He went on to receive his mechanical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1951 and also received his Masters degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1959. He worked at Bell Labs with AT&T for over 30 years and retired in 1986. During that time, he was able to create a number of patents, including call waiting and call forwarding. Work was his career, but it was his family that defined him.
He was married to the love of his life, Bella Kreisman Kandel, on March 7, 1953. They were married for almost 47 years before she succumbed in 2000 to her pancreatic cancer. Sam Kandel, who was lovingly known as"Zayde", along with his wife Bella, raised two sons; Louis Kandel, Joseph Kandel. Sam was involved with every aspect of their childhood, attending every tennis match, making sure that the school system had a science fair, and making sure that the Columbus, Ohio community where the family was raised would be the best that it could be. He was everyone's father, always taking the time to tutor family friends, and he was involved with every service community organization that he could find. He was the president of the Berwick Civic Association for three years, developing a recycling program, creating the"Welcome to Berwick" signs, and helping to work on the Holocaust Park. He was on the Berwick Civic Association board for three years.
It's hard to measure the value of a life, particularly one that is so full with achievements; Zayde had a number of unique awards, including the Mayor's Award for Voluntary Service, the Distinguished Alumni Award for outstanding achievement from New Jersey Institute of technology, being a Pioneer for Bell Labs. He also was involved with a number of organizations including Junior achievement, PTA, Masonic group Knights of Pythias, B'nai B'rith, Temple shalom member, American Red Cross, synagogue Board of Trustees, just to name a few.
Pop is survived by his sons, Louis and wife Mindy, and Joseph and wife Merrylee, his grand children Matthew and Lindsey, and Max, Hannah, and Geena, and great grand daughter, Izzabella. At 93 1/2 years old, Pop has outlived most of his friends, but he never met a stranger. Every person he met became a new friend. His loud voice at temple, his wonderful expressions, his smile, his twinkling blue eyes, and his optimistic view of the world will be sorely missed.
He was a brilliant man in so many ways, and always had such a big presence. His passing leaves the world a little less bright.
