Betty Beach Horkey

Betty Beach Horkey passed away on June 8, 2014 at Joanne's House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, FL. Betty was born in Des Moines, IA on May 2, 1923; daughter of Kenneth A. and Christine Moon Beach. She was raised after the age of 4 in Point Place, Toledo, OH.
After graduating from Waite High School in Toledo, OH, Betty joined the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. She attended CSI School in Chicago for aviation instrument repair. Her Duty Stations and Naval Air Stations included Clinton OK, Dallas TX, Pensacola FL, Bunker Hill, and Peru IN.
She married Alfred Horkey of Cicero, IL on the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL on October 26, 1944.
After discharge, Al and Betty briefly lived in Chicago and then returned to Toledo, Ohio until the year 2000 at which time she starting living full time in Bonita Springs, FL.
Betty worked for Lane Drug Company, Lamson's Dept. Store and J.L Hudson Dept. Store. She retired in 1979 as area sales manager for Hudson's. She joined her husband Al, co- owner of City Reproduction Services, as the office manager.
Al and Betty retired in 1988, traveling and spending winters at their Florida condo. They lived and enjoyed a full life - they did it all.
Betty is survived by sons, Jeff (Cheryl Werner) of Lambertville, MI and Bonita Springs, FL. and Dr. Joseph Horkey (Susan) of Boynton Beach, FL; granddaughters, Jolann Horkey Jones and Jennifer Kinney; great granddaughters, Shelby and Jalyn Kinney of Westerville, OH; grandson, Joseph (Chip) Horkey; and granddaughter, Jacqueline Horkey of Boynton Beach, FL and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her long-time Navy friend, Elva Payne of Gold Beach, OR.
She was preceded in death by husband Al, 'my pal' after 56 years of marriage; father, Kenneth, mother, Christine; her brothers, William (Mary Jane), Chan (Grace) and Paul (Joann), and her niece, Carry Jo Richter.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Tr. So. Bonita Springs.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
