SOUTHERN PINES, NC -- Frances Lina Douglass, "Fran" 90, of Southern Pines, NC, passed away on March 17, 2013 at the Penick Village.
Fran Douglass was born in Ayer, Massachusetts to Lina DesChamps Horgan and William Francis Horgan on September 27, 1922. Fran was a nurse and a life-long volunteer. In nearly 30 years of service, Fran was a volunteer in the recovery room, radiation oncology, and ambulatory surgery at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, contributing a total of 20,912 hours of volunteer service. Fran earned many awards in 30 years, including the Governor's Volunteer Award, and was recognized by the North Carolina Volunteer Association for her service. As a devoted member of St. Anthony's of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Fran served many years as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Women's Club and Parish Council, and a school volunteer. Fran was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Women's Guild. She and her husband Doug traveled extensively around the country in their motor home.
Fran is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Col. Graham T. Douglass, USMC, and her brother, William Manus Horgan. Fran is survived by her three daughters, Suzanne Phillips and husband John of Aberdeen, NC, Sarah Johnson and husband Toby of Pinehurst, NC and Sandy Douglass and partner Susan Hester of Washington, DC, and son Graham T. Douglass Jr., "Scott" and his wife Kathy of Durham, NC. Fran is also survived by her grandchildren Robert Douglass and his wife Mary of Durham, NC, Lauren Johnson of Washington, DC, and Douglass Johnson of Chapel Hill, NC, her great-granddaughter Abigail Douglass of Durham, NC, and niece Gail Horgan Januskiewicz and family of Ayer, Massachusetts.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the dedicated employees of Penick Village for their genuine kindness and devotion to Fran over the past six years.
DOUGLASS -- A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony's of Padua Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday March 19, 2013 at 10:00am with Monsignor Jeffrey Ingham officiating. Rite of Commital will occur at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery in Quantico, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Penick Village Foundation in memory of Fran Douglass for the Life Enrichment Activities Dept., P.O. Box 2001, Southern Pines, NC 28388.
