Thomas M. Quatrale
of Shirley, Navy Vet; 93
SHIRLEY -- Thomas M. Quatrale, 93, of Shirley, died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center, Ayer.
Thomas M. Quatrale was born in Fitchburg, December 21, 1920. He was part of a large Italian American family of twelve children born to Domenico Quatrale and Lena (Sicuranza) Quatrale, and has resided in Shirley for nearly 60 years.
Their farm was one of several that sat on the land which is the current site of the Fitchburg airport. He had two sisters, Josephine and Margaret, and nine brothers, Philip, Silvio, Alfred, Ferdinand, Pasquale, Robert, Dominic, Edmund & Oreste.
He attended school in Leominster and joined the US Navy
in 1942. He went to Navy electrician school in Newport RI and Submarine training school in New London, CT shortly after. During WWII
, he served on the Submarine USS Cero SS-225 making a total of seven war patrols in and around the Sea of Japan.
After the war, Tom returned to Massachusetts and met and married Roseanna Landry of Shirley. During the time they raised their four sons, he worked over 30 years as a shirt cutter at the former Cluet Peabody Company in Leominster where he was very proud of his participation in the Labor Union. He also worked several years for Nashoba Mills in Shirley as a finishing room manager before retiring in 1985.
Tom loved baseball and softball and played on and coached several teams. He had a passion for gardening and grew some of the best tomatoes the world has ever seen. He was a member of the Shirley American Legion Post and the Eagles of Leominster, and a lifelong FDR Democrat.
He leaves his wife of 66 years, Roseanna M. (Landry) Quatrale; as well as four sons; Thomas M. Quatrale and his wife, Maggie of Derry, NH; James T. Quatrale and his wife, Cynthia, of Sterling; Michael D. Quatrale and his wife, Joanne of Shirley and John P. Quatrale of Royalston. He also leaves two brothers, Dominic Quatrale of Ayer, and Edmund Quatrale of Tolland, CT; six grandchildren, Thomas, Ryan, Jason, Stephen, Ashley and Nicole Quatrale; and one great-granddaughter, Lucy Roseanna Quatrale of Bradenton, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews.
QUATRALE -- Mr. Quatrale's family will receive family and friends from 1-3 PM Saturday, March 1st at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, (Rte. 2A), Ayer. A prayer service will be offered at 3 PM. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com
