KENNEBUNK, ME -- Ronald Gaumond, 73, a resident of Kennebunk, ME died March 26, 2014, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, ME two days shy of his 74th birthday. Ron was born in Lawrence, MA to Donald and Shirley Gaumond. He graduated high school in Beverly, MA and went on to receive his undergraduate in education from Salem State University, Salem, MA. Ron received his Master's degree in teaching from The University of Connecticut and continued post-graduate studies in mathematics at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA. He served in the Coast Guard Reserve, stationed in Groton, CT.
Ron began his teaching career at South Windsor High School in Connecticut before accepting a job with Hamilton-Wenham High School in Massachusetts. After a rewarding position teaching mathematics and coaching soccer and wrestling, Ron accepted the appointment of Chairman of the Math Department at The Bromfield School, Harvard, MA where he remained until his retirement in 2000. Ron continued to teach at a number of private and public colleges after his retirement including an adjunct position with University of New England, Biddeford, ME. Over his 40 years of teaching, Ron received many accolades including a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and The Golden Apple Awarded from his students. He also served as the President of the Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Mathematics.
Following his retirement Ron continued to tutor students as well as volunteer as a builder and board member with Habitat for Humanity, York County, ME. A man who believed in putting faith into action, Ron also served as Deacon at the Congregational Church in Lancaster, MA and was an active member of The Good Shepherd's Cove Church, Arundel, ME through which he served his community in the soup kitchens and food pantries.
Ron is predeceased by his father Don, his brother Michael and sister Rosemary (Holding). He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Gaumond and their daughters Lisa Gaumond of Providence, RI and Kathy Schuck, son-in-law Alex and granddaughters Kara and Jillian Schuck of Andover, MA.
Ron was known for his sense of humor, great love for his family, friends and students. He enjoyed golf, wood working, the Ocean and his church family.
GAUMOND -- A celebration of Ron's life will be held at 12PM on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the South Congregational Church, 2 North St., Kennebunkport, ME. Pastors Bruce Bryant and Charles Whiston will be officiating.
