LENGAUER, Karl Walter
October 22, 1926 - August 26, 2012
Karl W. Lengauer passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012. He was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, and followed the post war call to "go west, young man" to Canada in 1951. He made his home in beautiful Alberta, where he married, built a house and raised a family. Karl enjoyed hiking and skiing the Rockies until a devastating car accident altered the course of his life, and left him in chronic pain. In the early days, Karl worked at Calgary Eaton's until his entrepreneurial spirit prompted him to start Avanti Art & Glass Co. Ltd. His inspired vocation as a self-taught stained glass artist spanned five decades and he touched the lives of countless people. He was respected as an artist, a mentor and a friend by those who worked with him, and his desire to create beauty left a legacy of magnificent windows throughout Alberta and beyond. Karl's intellectual curiosity and sense of conviction made for lively conversation with anyone in his sphere. He enjoyed exploring how things are made, from gadgets to The Universe. He delighted in the wonders of nature and he preferred to walk barefoot. He was a philosopher, a night owl, an introvert. Karl was a kind and gentle man, and we are better for him having been among us. "Without Love, I am Nothing." He will always be remembered by his daughter Patricia, son Julian (Carla), their mother Barbara Lengauer and her relatives, and many dear friends, and the Ettmayer and Hirsch families in Austria who fondly called him Putzi-Onkel. Please join in for a Celebration of Life, to be held at the North Glenmore Park Rowing and Canoe Clubhouse on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., with dessert to follow. Interment will be held at the Canmore Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to extend special appreciation for Alberta Health Care, to Karl's medical professionals, and those at the Foothills and Rockyview Hospitals, Carewest Glenmore Park and the Peter Lougheed Centre. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, if so desired, memorial tributes may be made directly to Karl's chosen charities: The War Amps CHAMPS Program (Telephone 1-800-250-3030) and the CNIB (Telephone 1-800-563-2642). In living memory of Karl Lengauer, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
