Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 14 to Jul. 22, 2006.
RICHARD GEORGE POHOSKI, P. Eng., Virtuti Militari 1924-2006 On Sunday, June 25th, 2006, at the Charles Lemoyne Hospital, Mr. Richard Pohoski passed away in his 82nd year after a long battle with chronic leukemia, bravely borne. He is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Maria Brunner, his loving daughter Jane and son-in-law James Hnatchuk. He was a loving Opa to his beloved grandchildren, Darlene, Gregory (Melissa Leggitt) and Jeffrey, as well as great-grandchildren, Sarah, Michael and Amy. He also leaves to mourn his sister-in-law Anna (the late Karl Hammerschmidt), his nephews Karl (Carol Murphy), Arthur (Marlies Huc), Ken (Lili Misztal) and niece, Tina (Scott Simpson), along with their respective families. Richard was born in Poland and attended the Warsaw Polytechnic. His studies were cut short by World War II. He participated in the 1944 Warsaw uprising and was taken prisoner of war to Germany. During the uprising, while wounded and under heavy bombardment and artillery fire he led 160 people to safety through the sewers of Warsaw. For this act of bravery he was awarded the Virtuti Militari, Poland's highest military honour. After the war he settled in Germany. In 1949 he arrived in Montreal with the determination to build a brighter future for himself and his family. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his Engineering degree at Concordia University in 1979. He was a 35 year long employee at Pratt & Whitney, both in Longueuil and Missisauga. Richard was always ready, willing and able to help family, friends and neighbours. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 28 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Collins Clarke MacGillivray, 307 Riverside, St. Lambert QC. Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary's Church, 125 Grove Street in Greenfield Park on Thursday, June 29 at 11 a.m. Thence to Notre Dame Des Neiges Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice would be appreciated
