John died after a brief illness one month short of his 84th birthday, at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He was born in Portsmouth, England and was the fourth of six children. During the war, he was evacuated to the New Forest where he completed high school. Postwar, he fulfilled obligatory military service and studied Bio-Chemistry at the University of Manchester. He worked for Atomic Energy UK before immigrating to Canada in 1957. He then worked for Atomic Energy in Ottawa until he joined Burroughs Wellcome Inc., working in Toronto, Windsor and Montreal until his retirement. John and Ingeborg Jürgensen were married in 1960 in Toronto; they settled in Pointe-Claire in 1966. John was a devoted and proud Dad to Ron, Niel (Kathy) and Jay (Neva), Grandpa John to Mitch, Joey and Nicky (Newmarket, Ont.) and Max, Lucy and Miles (Vancouver, BC), brother to his beloved sister Dot (Brian) Barrett (and extended family in England), brother-in-law to Christa and Larry Lutz, Middleport, NY, Uncle John to Brian Lutz, Stamford, Conn. (and extended family in Germany) and was a friend to many. John will be dearly missed for his love of letters, humour, music, his cultured charm and unflappable calm. Hard working, tenacious and loyal, his stories, tales and turns of phrase will live long. He rests in peace. Private cremation has taken place. A celebration of John's life will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers we honour John's memory.
