We are all diminished by the passing of this wonderful man.
Dr Jack Leland Riudavets Williams Ph.D. of Namao, Alberta died February 27th at the age of 89 years at the Youville Home in St Albert, Alberta.
Dr Williams was born in Edmonton on October 25, 1923 to cattle commission agent Leland "Lee" Stanford Williams (Principal of Weiller & Williams Co. Ltd.) and Marion Letitia Williams nee Peacock.
He graduated, Honours Chemistry, University of Alberta 1946, a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in organic chemistry in 1948 and a DuPont PhD Fellow at the University of Wisconsin in 1949. His professional career was spent at the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories, Chemical Division in Rochester, NY achieving Senior Division Head. He traveled worldwide for Chemical Conferences and while at Kodak had a lecture series named after him and a colleague, named The Weissberger and Williams Lectures.
He married Helen Quigley in 1950 and separated in 1982 thereupon moving to Heidelberg, Germany for 13 years, while retaining his home in Namao. In 1997 he severed the relationship with Ursula Krauch of Heidelberg and returned full time to Namao. In 1996 he met Leona F Pritchard and they have lived together in Namao since 1997.
A Hobby is too small a word to describe his passion, spanning 50 years, for Ham Radio. His arrays in Namao are world class. One array in particular was used for Moon Bouncing. We sadly retire his two Call Signs, K2JFV, USA and VE6JW.
He is survived by his life partner Leona Pritchard, her two children, Chantelle Volorney Smearer of Fort Saskatchewan and Ben Volorney of Edmonton. His wife Helen Q Williams of Pittsford, NY, sons, Leland Williams of Rochester, NY, Mark Williams of New York, NY, Jack Williams Jr. of Glen Allen, VA, daughters, Julie Meder of Pittsburgh, PA and Janet Barbaccia of Pittsford, NY and fourteen grandchildren.
We will tip our champagne glasses to you Jack in celebration of your brilliant intellect, sense of fun and adventure and your 50+ trips to Paris.
