MY deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the family of Dr Austin Clarke. I remembered Tom as a fellow athlete and friend at Combermre School who inspired me to run track. The year he was Division 1 Champion, I was division 2 Champion at our school athletic sports meeting. Tom was a great guy and had a remarkable personality. May he rest in peace.

I first met Austin on the Griot Tour, my introduction to his mesmerizing storytelling. I had the delight to tour him in Edmonton on different occasions, watch him taking command of his audience, delight in hearing when the colonial met the Queen and thoroughly applauded his many accolades. He was a student of hard work, discipline and perfection. His legacy will live on, especially for those of us privileged to spend time with him. My most sincere condolences to the family. I will remember falling off my seat laughing at one of Austin Clarke's impromptu stories onstage at The Gladstone one evening. Throughout his comedic tale I was inspired by messages of resistance and resilience. Thank you Mr. Clarke for your leadership and brilliant talent. May you rest in peace. Our community has lost a great leader.

To The Clarke Family: Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of Mr. Austin Clarke. Whenever I hear the name, 'Austin Clarke', it not only reminds me of my parents talking about growing up in Barbados and about the famous remarks made by Mr. Clarke in his memoir entitled, Growing Up Stupid Under the Union Jack, his name reminds me of my grade 13 Canadian Literature English class where I received the highest mark in my class on my assignment which was based on him! :) Fast-forward the clock to eleven years ago when I saw him leisurely walking through College Park one winter afternoon. I was so pleased to finally meet the gentleman I wrote about for a class assignment that I couldn't contain my enthusiasm when I told him about it, and he just laughed. After our brief conversation, I characterized him as being a down-to-earth, amusing, and personable soul.
Although Mr. Clarke is no longer with you 'physically', he will always be with you in the form of precious memories and within his written word. May Mr. Clarke's soul rest in everlasting peace...
