Eileen B. Dumas, 96, a longtime Rensselaer resident, died Wednesday at the University Place senior living facility in West Lafayette.
Born in 1916, Mrs. Dumas grew up on her family's farm near Kentland. She was the daughter of Albert J. and Helen (nee Britton) Bower.
A 1939 graduate of Purdue University, Mrs. Dumas worked as a chemistry and home economics teacher and later for the Purdue Extension Service, based in Rensselaer, as a home-furnishings specialist who traveled throughout the state.
In 1948 she married Thomas B. Dumas in Kentland. Mr. Dumas, who died in 1998, practiced law in Rensselaer for many decades, establishing the firm now called Dumas and Mahnesmith, in which he was joined by his son, Edward in 1976.
Mrs. Dumas lived in Rensselaer from 1946 to 2009. She was an active member of the Kappa Kappa Kappa philanthropic sorority, Curtis Creek Country Club, and the Purdue University Alumni Association. She was a parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a fellow of St. Joseph's College. Mrs. Dumas was an avid gardener and bird-watcher and loved the game of golf.
In addition to her son Edward and his wife Anne, she is survived by two daughters, Helen Gioia (Daniel) of Valparaiso and Ann Dumas-Swanson (Stevenson) of Pelham, N.Y.; a sister, Miriam Clouser, of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Charles, and two brothers, Richard Bower of Kentland and William Bower of Indianapolis.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, concluding with a prayer service conducted by Fr. Don Davison, C.PP.S.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine church; the celebrants will be Fr. William Stang, C.PP.S., and Deacon Patrick Bower.
Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
