James N. Montgomery, age 96, of Brook, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at 2:15 a.m. at University Place in West Lafayette. He was born Aug. 26, 1916 in Brook to the late James N. and Leontine R. Winquist Montgomery. He was a lifelong resident of Brook.

His marriage was to D. Janet Ford on June 30, 1938 in Goodland, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2009. He was a 1934 graduate of Brook High School. He attended Purdue University for two years and then completed at the Indianapolis School of Pharmacy in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1945. He owned and operated Montgomery's Drug Store from 1952-1989. He was a member of Brook United Methodist Church and the Brook American Legion. Mr. Montgomery loved roses, bird watching, dancing, and was a wine connoisseur.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra L. (Alan) Brown, Tipton, Ind.; one son, James N. (Gerlinde) Montgomery III, Cheney, Wash.; four grandchildren, Christian A. (Tricia) McCallister, Benjamin Z. (Miki) McCallister, Jennifer (Jeff) Clarke, Shirley (Dave) Osborn; five great-grandchildren, Hanna and Henry McCallister, Cameron and Danielle Osborn, and Grace S. Clarke.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Stephanie A. McCallister, brother Maxwell, and sister Lucy Mohr.
Friends called Saturday, Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. until his funeral service at 11 a.m. at Gerts Funeral Home in Brook. Revs. Bob Fish and Ann Pigman offficiated. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery, Brook.
