William Francis Smart, 87, of Rensselaer, passed away Monday evening, July 28, 2014 at the Rensselaer Care Center. He was born in Walkerton, IN May 9, 1927, son of the late Elmer D. and Hulda Ione (Smith) Smart. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper and Newton Counties.
Francis attended Morocco High School and then joined the U.S. Army as a member of the Private Calvary. He was self-employed working on plumbing, heating and cooling. He was the Morocco Fire Chief for 25 years and received a 50 Year Pin from the department. He was a lifetime member of the Indiana Volunteer Firemen's Association and was a Bingo caller at the Jasper County Community Center.
Francis is survived by his loving family: wife Charity Smart of Rensselaer; one son, David Leon (Judy) Smart of Morocco; two daughters: Darlene Lynn of Gilbertsville, KY and Linda (Rick) Kendall of Morocco; six grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents; one sister; two brothers; and his first wife Dorothy.
Per Francis' wishes, cremation will take place and a graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Oakland Cemetery in Morocco.
