Richard Lighthall Obituary

Richard J. Lighthall, 86 DEL MAR -- Richard J. Lighthall, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011. He was born September 18, 1924 in N.Y. and grew up in Darien, Conn. In the USMC, he fought on Iwo Jima. After two years at Hamilton College, he finished his B.A at Occidental and then planned and directed the Oceanside Boys' Club 12 years. While there, he was chosen Father of the Year before he had his own. Camping and back- packing in the Sierras with Dick, many developed a love for nature. After earning a M.A. at SDSU, he taught political science at Mesa College 20 years. In Del Mar, he was a volunteer in Children's Creative Workshops, Scripps Memorial, TP Preserve, and the community plan. Music was a great love, and each year he sang himself hoarse with the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, who chose him Irishman of the Year in 2006. In 1956, he married the former Arlene Ahlgrim, who survives him; along with sons, Samuel and Geoffrey; and grandchildren, Sara and Rachel. The family suggests donations to the Glenner Alzheimer's Center, Encinitas. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 25, at St. Peter's Church, Del Mar, Calif. Not sure what to say?

I think kids were what attracted you -- the Boys and Girls Club, then your high school and Mesa College students. You taught. Teaching is a noble kind of life, and nobility is not foreign to who you were. Goodbye, friend.

I remember his quick wit, with a smile and good word for everyone. We used to exchange conversation in Italian at the Torrey Pines Docent meetings and his East Coast accent made this Jersey girl feel right at home. I lost my dad too at age 86, my heart goes out to you Arlene and your family at this time.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dick as a fellow member of the FSOSP and had the distinct honor of presenting him his Irishman of the Year award. We all enjoyed his keen sense of humor and pleasant disposition. We also enjoyed learning how he entered the Marine Corps (and later found himself on Iwo Jima) because the Navy enlistment line was too long! May God Bless him and give comfort to all his loved ones.

My condolences to the family. I was a member of the Boys Club and later an employee under Dick as the club Director. Dick instilled a life long love of the outdoors in me from the camping trips to the Sierras that I went on with him. He was a truely great man an role model for me and will be missed. Tommy Badillo

My condolences to Arlene and family. As a little boy in Oceanside I was #7 to join the club when it opened way back when. Dick played an important part in my young life and I remember him telling me to do my best, be proud and you can achieve your goals. I remember his taking about 15 of us camping in the Sierra in a big old truck. I am now retired from the Oceanside Police Dept as a Sergeant and then later as the head of security at Oceanside High School, but I still fondly remember the good times that Dick and the Boy's Club provided for me. God bless
