Marvelle Cory Obituary

Marvelle I. Cory, 85 ENCINITAS -- Marvelle I. Cory died peacefully in her home, Wednesday August 8, 2012. In the same year that saw Charles Lindbergh fly The Spirit of St. Louis nonstop across the Atlantic and the start of work on Mount Rushmore, Marvelle Ilene Cory was born in Forest Lake, Minnesota in 1927 to Norman and Agnes Peterson. An adventurous spirit, she would move to San Francisco 16 years later with her mother before laying down roots in the beautiful coastal town of Encinitas. While working at Rexall Drug Store, Marvelle caught the eye of a young man named Edward Cory (co-owned Cory Brothers Menswear for 60 years). Their love affair that began with a glance and spanned 60 joyous and loving years before Ed's passing seven years ago. Her brother Morlin, passed last year. Marvelle was a student of Tibetan Buddhism. Always in tune with her spirituality, she would open her home, her heart, and her soul to all those she came in contact with. Marvelle enjoyed sharing her spiritual discipline with others through practicing and teaching Yoga. She also studied Tai Chi and played classical guitar and piano. After their children were grown, to satisfy their wanderlust, Marvelle and Edward changed their address to their Lazy Daze Motorhome as they set off to explore. Their travels took them to every state in the continental US and as far south as Guatemala in Central America. The warmth of the Mexican sun kept them returning for months on end to the tranquil and inviting beaches of Baja. Back at home, family gatherings were frequent and well attended at the Cory household. From birthdays, graduation, anniversaries and any minor excuse to gather, the Cory family and friends made the most of all occasions. The patio built by her son Kenneth soon became referred to as "Nana's Cabana." Even in the wake of her passing, Nana's Cabana continues to be a gathering spot to congregate and celebrate the life and legacy of the amazing, compassionate and unforgettable Marvelle Cory. Marvelle is survived by her sons and daughters -in-law, Michael and Jacqueline Cory of Berkeley, Steven and Sharon Cory of La Costa, Eddie and Jody Cory of Fallbrook; sons, Cris Cory and Ken Cory, both of Encinitas, Scott Cory of Thousand Oaks; and daughters and sons-in- law, Julie and David McClurg of Del Mar and Marvie and Martin Van Roosendaal of La Costa; 12 grandchildren, Cory, Miracle, Megan, Katie, Connor, Madison, Blake, Brian, James, Haley, Cris, and Anna; plus three great-grandchildren, Thomas, Isabella, and Giana. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Encinitas Community & Senior Center, 1140 Oak Crest Park Dr., Encinitas. Refreshments provided.
