Herman Reich Obituary

Herman Charles Reich, 91 FALLBROOK - Herman Charles Reich, 91, died Thursday, October 22, 2009. Born Nov. 23, 1917 in Bell, California, he lived in Fallbrook for over 42 years, where he worked as an avocado rancher after his retirement from professional baseball in 1965. He spent over 22 years in professional baseball as a player, manager, and scout, including a season in the major leagues in which he played first base and right field for the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago Cubs. He proudly served in the United States Army and Army Air Force during World War II. A lifelong athlete, he coached youth sports and was an avid tennis player, golfer, and sport fisherman well into his golden years. His love of baseball carried him to many Padre games, old-timer reunions, and storytelling sessions with old teammates and friends. Mr. Reich is survived by his wife of 13 years, Victoria Reich of Fallbrook; son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Lisa Reich of West Point, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Jim Fleming of Huntington Beach; son and daughter-in- law, Chris and Paula Reich of Etna; and three grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fallbrook, on Wednesday, October 28, followed by interment at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery. Herm Reich will always be fondly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, zest for life, and great love for family and friends. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com

Dear Ted and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Herman was a wonderful person and I have many fond memories in Fall brook as a kid going around the avocado ranch in his Jeep and all the wonderful cook outs he would have. I will surely miss him.

Best regards,

Ernie & Chelley ERickson

Our condolences to the family of a long-time neighbor, a fine man. Our daughter, Krista, was in a parent-coop carpool with Ted and other neighborhood children to Bonsall Elementary School. Herm was a warm, friendly and helpful neighbor from the time we moved into our place in May of 1974. We will be praying for comfort of the family in this loss.
