Donald D. Zimmerman, Sr., passed away on Feb. 1, 2014, at his home after a long fight with cancer.
Born in Kingston, he was the son of the late Dale K. and Bertha (Noss) Zimmerman.
Donald was retired from The Lion Brewery where he was a line mechanic. He was the current 1st Vice Commander at the Harvey's Lake American Legion Post 0967 and started their 1st Honor Guard. This truly was one of his great Passions.
Donald was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He dedicated his entire life to his family and helping those around him. He will be deeply missed by his wife Shirley (Denmon) Zimmerman; his daughters, Brenda and her husband Alan Pugh, of Dallas; Julie Sitkowski, of Dallas; his son Donald Zimmerman and his wife Heather, of Dallas; along with seven grandchildren: Rachael Pugh, Alan L. Pugh, Adrienne Pugh-Eyet and her husband Russell, Samantha Zimmerman, Carl Zimmerman, Klay Zimmerman and Taylor Sitkowski; and two great grandchildren, Nathan and Christian.
Also surviving Donald are his brothers David Zimmerman and his friend Donna Krzywicki, of Shavertown; Arthur and his wife Gloria Zimmerman, of York; Carl and his wife Ruth Zimmerman, of Deland, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald loved fishing, hunting, bowling, working in his yard and spending time with family and friends. Donald was involved with Harvey's Lake American Legion Post 0967, Dallas Irem Temple, George M. Dallas, Lodge # 531, Wyoming Valley Bowlers Association, Bob Horlacher Little League, United States Marine Corps., and Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Dallas.
If you are from this area, there is a good chance you spent time under Don's tent. From the Luzerne County Fair to Harvey's Lake American Legion Children's Fishing Tournament to graduations and back yard parties, if you had an event going on, all you had to do was ask and the tent was yours at no cost. That is just who he was.
While our hearts are filled with sadness, your spirit lives strong in each one of us. The day that you had to leave us, the sunshine shone bright like your laugh that always brightened the room. Our hearts are filled with sorrow from your final goodbye. We wish you could have stayed. But they needed you upstairs and the angels called you their own way. There must be a good reason, one we cannot understand, but we're sure there is a window to hang or ten pin that needs to be had. In the breeze, we will feel your kiss laid upon our cheek and from the sun, we will feel your warmth. When it thunders, we will know you're bowling and that the "300s" are racking up. Every time we see our flag, we will be reminded that you continue serving your God, country and community. Rest easy, Dad, there's a ton of work to do.
