Donald Ayre, 81, of 2200 First Avenue, Pottsville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, in Pottsville.
Donald was born in Tunkhannock, Nov. 13, 1932, to the late James and Charlotte (Cleveland) Ayre.
He was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School and East Stroudsburg University.
After serving 32 years in the U.S. Navy
. He retired as a commander. He received the Purple Heart
and Bronze Star
while serving in the Vietnam War
After his retirement, he was a history teacher in Clearwater, Fla.
Preceding him in death was a son, Steven; his wife, the former JoAnn Ashman; brothers: Kenneth and Robert; sisters: Beverly Faux and Dorothy Jacques.
He is survived by sons: Donald Ayre, and David Ayre and his wife Cheryl; daughter Donna Harris and her husband Robert, all of Tunkhannock; grandchildren: Donna Hughes (Gary) of Clarks Summit, Andrea Walko (Joseph) of Allentown, Deanne Ayre of Tunkhannock, and David Ayre of Scranton; great grandchildren: MacKenzie and Madison Hughes, and Ella Walko. Also surviving are sisters: Gertrude White (Charles) of Syracuse, N.Y., and Gladys St. Clair of Tunkhannock; brother Glenn of Tunkhannock; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 9, in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven, with Rev. Harold L. Hand Jr., Trinity Lutheran Church, Pottsville, officiating.
