Lena (Faye) Oakes, 71, of 4030 Upper Meshoppen Creek Rd., Meshoppen, went home to be with her Lord, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2014, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, where she had been taken earlier in the week.
Faye was born in Auburn Center, on Oct. 28, 1942, the eldest daughter of Almon J. Harvey, who passed away in 1989, and Olive E. Dymond Harvey, who passed away in 2006.
Growing up in Auburn Center, just outside of Meshoppen, Faye was a life-long resident of the Meshoppen area. She was the wife of Gilbert L. Oakes Sr., who passed away on Jan. 21, 1997. They were married on Friday, Sept. 13, 1963.
Faye worked for many years at Ritz Textiles Manufacturing, in Montrose. She was also a bartender at the Bear's Den in Meshoppen, for more than 15 years, and retired on Oct. 12, 2011, from R.J's Food Mart, in Meshoppen, where she had worked for many years prior.
Faye enjoyed life, and loved to be surrounded by her family and her large extended family. She enjoyed going fishing and doing crafts, watching and feeding the animals and birds, watching games shows, playing games, especially Yahtzee, and playing cards. Faye loved to go to the many area casinos with her family. Also, Faye was a member of the Women's Bowling League at the South Montrose Lanes, for many years.
Surviving are her children: Gilbert Jr. and his wife Beth Oakes of Meshoppen, Cindy and her husband Nick Cona of Meshoppen, Brenda and her husband Roger Green of Tunkhannock, Gary and his wife Norma Oakes of Sweet Valley, and Donald and his wife Denise Oakes of Meshoppen. Faye was also survived by her 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and she was anxiously awaiting the arrival of two more great-grandchildren. Her extended family also included four brothers: James (Phyllis) Harvey, of Brookville, Albert (Allison) Harvey of Harveys Lake, Ralph Harvey of Meshoppen, and Selim "Sam" Harvey of Kunkle; and her five sisters: Anna Wandell of Durhamville, N.Y., Betty Lou (Jack) Vaow of Meshoppen, Sharon Harvey of Tunkhannock, Donna Shoemaker of Meshoppen, and Judy Harvey of Noxen, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Donald Harvey (1947), Harry Harvey (1984), Earl Harvey (2000), and William Harvey (2010); as well as five sisters: Joan Harvey (1962), Connie Sherwood (2007), Shirley Hallock (2008), Alberta Belcher (2012), and Charlotte Hunter (2013).
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, SR 6, Meshoppen, with Rev. Gary Myers of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church officiating, Interment will be in the Jersey Hill Cemetery, in Auburn Center. Calling hours were Tuesday evening, Feb. 25.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial donations to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley ICU, 1000 E. Mountain Blvd, Wilkes Barre, PA 18711. Also, the family would like to ask all of Faye's family and friends to plant a tree or to plant some flowers in the memory and honor of Lena Faye Harvey Oakes.
