Alvin Gene Miller, 79, of Mikado, Mich., formerly of Oscoda, Mich., passed away Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at home, surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 10, 1934, to the late Elizabeth and Guy T. Miller in Mahoning Twp.
Alvin was a 1953 graduate of Falls-Overfield High School.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and retired as a tech sergeant in 1974.
On Sept. 11, 1965, he married Janice E. (nee Holder) Fulgham in Oscoda. Together, with their children, they lived in Georgia and California. Upon their return to Michigan, Alvin retired at Wurstsmith Air Force Base.
Alvin was a member of Oscoda American Legion Post 274, the 40 et 8 No. 669 and the Oscoda Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 3735.
Since 1981, Alvin had donated more than 7,000 hand-crafted wooden toy cars and trucks to the Oscoda Toys for Tots campaign. Also, in association with the Oscoda American Legion, he was instrumental in starting a nursing scholarship.
He is survived by his two daughters: Vanessa (John) Webster of Mikado, Mich., and Lorraine (John) Pulda of Oscoda. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Alvin is also survived by 11 siblings: Celia (Norman) Swartz of Sayre, Alora Jones of Clarks Summit, Anna Oister of Birdsboro, Paul (Carol) Miller of Lake Winola, Grace (Norval) Treat of Tunkhannock, Fred (Linda) Miller of Tunkhannock, Neil (Joanne) Miller of Olyphant, Mary Bynum of Idaho, Mabel (Ronald) Stubbs of Scranton, John Miller of Port Ewen, N.Y. and Rebecca (Joseph) Macijowsky of Factoryville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, in 1998 and daughter, Linda Curtis, in 2012.
There was a memorial service on Monday, Aug. 26 at the Oscoda (Mich.) American Legion. Cremation had already taken place by the Cremation Society of Mid-Michigan.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Legion Post 274 c/o the Nursing Program, 349 S. State St., Oscoda, MI, 48750 or the Oscoda Toys for Tots campaign.
