Paul J. Banko, 77, of Montrose, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.

He was born in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, to the late George M. Sr. and Julia (Filschak) Banko.
He is survived his sister Veronica Frank of South Montrose; brother and sister-in-law: Andrew and Mary Banko of Susquehannal; brother-in-law Stanley Zebrowski of Springville; seven grandchildren: Tonya Hemenway of Elk Lake, Christina Bartkus of Falls, Joey Bartkus of Clarks Summit, Michael Bartkus of Montrose, Stephen Bartkus of South Montrose, Roseann Webster of New Mexico, and Patricia Carpenter of Danville; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Paul was predeceased by his wife Esther Grick Banko; daughter Eileen Bartkus; sons David and Kenwood Grick; sister Mary Zebrowski; brothers George and Lawrence Banko; and grandson Joseph Bartkus.
He served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the American Legion Gardner-Warner Post #154 Montrose, and St. Bonaventure's Church in Auburn. He grew up on the family farm in Auburn, worked for Donald Dean & Sons Inc. for years, and retired as the manager of the Texaco gas station in Montrose.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, at the Holy Name of Mary Church, Montrose, with Father Gerard F. Safko officiating. A Graveside service will be held today, Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. at the Holy Name of Mary Cemetery.
