Toy Lee McKinney Obituary
TUPELO – Toy Lee McKinney, 65, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on April 29, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born July 7, 1948, to Turner Patterson ""T.P."" McKinney Jr. and Nervie Jane Hill McKinney in Pontotoc County. He graduated from Pontotoc Attendance Center in 1968 and from Tyler Barber College of Memphis in 1969. He became licensed as a beautician in 1985. He was the owner and operator of McKinney's Hair Fashions for more than 40 years. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, treasurer and male choir member. He was a member of many organizations including the Modern Beautician Club, Committee for King and lifetime member of the NAACP. He served on the Board of Barbers and was a licensed instructor for the State of Mississippi. He received numerous awards. He married Lola Garner on Oct. 11, 1981, and they were happily married for 32 years.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Lola McKinney, and two daughter, LaToya and Tarsha McKinney, all of Tupelo; his godchildren, DeVon and Calah McBride of Memphis, and Kingston Harris and Nilyne Knowles, both of Tupelo; his brothers and sisters, Marie (Lonnie) Brownlee of Memphis, Gennie (Alfred) Bradley of Belden, Thressa (Herbert) Spears of Belden, Earlene (Narvell) Nesbit of New Albany, Paulette Towner of Conway, Ark., Mary Partlow of Tupelo, Sharon Kilgore of Pontotoc, Debra (James) Tuggers of Tupelo, Early (Gwen) McKinney of Belden, Willie (Roberta) McKinney of Memphis, Charles McKinney of Belden, Standley McKinney of Atlanta, Ga., Nelson McKinney of Holly Springs, Lance (Brenda) McKinney of Collierville, Tenn., Robert (Sharon) McKinney of Fayetteville, Ga., Tommy Ware of Oxford; special friends, Dennis Otono, Mikel and Otha James, Rev. and Mrs. Tracey Hubbard, all of Tupelo; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, T.P. McKinney; his mother, Nervie Jane Hill; his newborn son, Toy Lee McKinney II; and his brother, James McKinney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Hope Church in Tupelo with the Rev. Dr. Charlie F. Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Chesterville M.B. Church Cemetery at Belden. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to the Toy Lee McKinney Scholarship Fund at any BancorpSouth location.
