William Clifford "Billy" West Jr. Obituary
VERONA – William Clifford ""Billy"" West Jr., 84, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April. 24, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lee County on Aug. 11, 1929, to William Clifford and Cecile Dye West of Verona. He married Vi Phillips West of Alcorn County on May 25, 1951.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a welder and fabricator for Central Electric, and a farmer. He owned and operated several businesses including: Verona Milling Company, Bill & Vi's Restaurant and West Liquid Fertilizer. He later founded West Wrecker Service in 1974 and worked there until his retirement in 1994.
An avid racing fan, ""Pap"", as he was affectionately known by his family, owned and sponsored his own dirt track car. He was an animal lover and always had horses, cattle, goats, ducks, geese, etc. on the family farm. Family was his favorite topic of conversation and he took every opportunity to show his love and affection for each of them.
He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Verona where he served as a trustee. He loved listening to southern gospel music.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Dr. David Hamilton officiating assisted by Bro.David Meadows and Bro. Larry Dunlap. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to service time on Saturday, all at Holland-Tupelo Chapel.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vi Phillips West ""Mama Vi""; three children, Tim (Wanda) West of Verona, Joe (Angie) West of Pontocola, Kathy (Greg) Waycaster of Old Union; one sister, Jane Jernigan of Verona; one brother, Mike (Carmita) West of Tupelo; six grandchildren, Josh (Jill)West, Adam (Jana) West, Amy (Chris) Parker, Will (Melanie) Waycaster, Luke West, Hannah Waycaster; and four great-grandchildren, Carter and Norah Lynn West and Clay and Micah West.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Clifford and Cecile West; one sister, Katherine Lorenze; brothers-in-law, Marlon Phillips, Jayda (Bud) Phillips, Carl Edward Jernigan ,Virgil Lorenze; and mother-in-law and father in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Phillips.
Pallbearers will be Josh West, Adam West, Will Waycaster, Luke West, Chris Parker, Eddie Wood, Rick Baggett and Brad Hoover.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Grace Sunday school class of First Baptist Church of Verona and Harlon Pigg, Michael Grays, Clyde Godfrey, Gene Godfrey, Marion Godfrey, Bob Anglin and Andrew Lee Metcalf.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the ministry of adoption. Contributions can be mailed to The William C. West Memorial Adoption Fund, P.O. Box 336, Verona, MS 38879.
