Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. He passed away February 8th, 2013 at Licking Memorial Hospital.
Ray recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born on November 21st, 1922 to Amzi and Abigail (Wright) Pound and was one of 9 children. He grew up in Newark and graduated from Newark High School in 1941. Ray lived a good life, loved his family and was an incredible husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ray met Margaret (Margy) Mike, the love of his life in high school and they were married on February 1st, 1942. Ray served in the Army Air Force in England as a sergeant during World War II from 1942-1945. After the war, Ray and Margy raised five daughters.
Ray was dedicated to serving the needs of Newark Township as a township trustee for 30 years. He also served as a volunteer fireman for Newark Township. He was a general contractor for years in Licking County and worked in the lightning rod business with his brother and father. In 1961, he founded Newark Overhead Door Co., which he owned and operated until 1993, when he retired.
Ray was always cheerful and kind to others; he loved taking nature walks and took a long walk every day with his dog, Bucky. He was an avid gardener and liked working in his greenhouse with his plants and tinkering in his garage. He loved family gatherings. He was also a Silver Sneakers participant at Northtowne Athletic Club and enjoyed meeting with friends at McDonalds.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Mike Pound in 1985, a sister, and several brothers. He is survived by daughters Cindy (Doug) Veenstra, Kathy (Paul) Hooge, Debbie Pound, Amie (Greg) Gough, and Peggy Pound. Grandchildren are Jonathan Pound, Sunny Gough, Michael Veenstra, Eric (Kathy) Hooge, Andrew (Nikki) Hooge, and two Great Grandchildren, Elora Hooge and Amelia Hooge. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Pryor and brother, Harold Pound and many nieces and nephews.
Children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will greatly miss him and his spirit and love for living. We thank all of his friends and neighbors for always being kind and helpful.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.
