MT VERNON: A Memorial Mass for Carl Gilligan, 85, of Mt. Vernon and formerly of Newark, will be celebrated Saturday, November 17, 2012, 11:00AM at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament with Rev. Jonathan Wilson and Rev. Stephen Metzger officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service at the Church, and immediately following the service at a luncheon reception to be held at the Blessed Sacrament Annex. Inurnment will be held at a later date in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Carl Gilligan died at Knox Community Hospital on November 13, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born February 26, 1927, in Newark, the third child of Edward Francis and Bernice Ruth (Siegle) Gilligan.

He was a member of the class of 1945 at Newark St. Francis de Sales High School. He and Wanda Diller were married in 1948 and shared over 62 years of a happy life. They have four children and six grandchildren: Michael (John Indalecio) of Brooklyn, New York; Patrick (Lynn Agapi Gilligan) and their daughters Halle, Kate, and Abby of Gambier; Sandra of Boise, Idaho; Mickey (Jim Mills) and their children Sam, Peter, and Anne Mills of Cincinnati. Following high school, Carl served in the Army Air Corps as an Administrative Specialist (MOS 502) last serving as a squadron Sergeant-Major. After discharge Carl worked at John J. Carroll's Department Store before joining The Phil Vogelmeier Co. where he retired after thirty-six years as Executive Vice President. He also served as Vice President of Columbus Van and Storage, and as President of Newark Contract Carrier. He was also appointed to the Board of Directors of BancOhio National Bank for Licking and Perry Counties.

Carl was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish and a former member of the Newark Kiwanis Club, and the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th degrees. He served several appointments by the mayor and county commissioners to committees for community development, children services, building of a new jail. He and Wanda were founding members of the Blessed Sacrament School Alumni/Alumnae Association and were the first editors of their newsletter.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Gilligan of Newark, and Bob (Nancy) Gilligan of Lexington, Kentucky; sisters-in-law Theresa Gilligan of Westerville, Vaida Thompson of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Shirley Rudolph of Newark; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 2011; his parents Frank and Bernice Gilligan; his mother-in-law Gladys Diller Veach; two brothers and a sister, Richard (Dorothy) Gilligan, Patty (Jack) Maier, Tom Gilligan; sisters-in-law Nina Gilligan and Geraldine Gilligan; nephews, Barry Diller and Dennis Gilligan; and a niece Nancy Jo Gilligan Knode.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be given to the Blessed Sacrament School Building Fund, 378 East Main St., Newark, Ohio 43055.
