Richard J. "Dick" Oder
HEATH: A funeral service for Richard J. "Dick" Oder, age 93, of Heath, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Shawn Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Dick passed away June 20, 2013 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). He was born June 29, 1919 in Newark to the late Elbert Franklin and Elizabeth Catherine (Hollar) Oder.
Dick was a graduate of Newark High School where he was heavily involved in athletics. He played semi-pro baseball in the 1940's. He turned down an offer to join the pros and stayed in Newark to be with his family. He then entered retail and purchased Mitchells Menswear in downtown Newark in 1954 which he retired from in 1981. He continued athletics throughout his life being an avid golfer while a member of Moundbuilders Country Club; and excelling at bowling, being the first to be inducted into the Newark Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1996. He also was a lifelong member of Neal Avenue United Methodist Church; a 70 year member of F & AM Newark Lodge #97 and a charter member of the Moundbuilder's chapter of DeMolay and recipient of the Legion of Honor from the International Supreme Council Order of DeMolay.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Marcie Wilson; three children, Elise (Brian) Hughes, Richard John (Heather) Oder and April (Mark) Peters; step children, Cheryl Cannon, Randy DelCecato, Mark (Cathy) DelCecato; 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Tanner, Keegan, Rowan, Derek, Catherine, Emma, Bethany, Brandon and Reagan; two great-grandchildren, Maicen and Parker; and special friends; caretaker, Maxine Behr and lifelong family friend, Joe Snelling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Norma J. (DelCecato) Oder in 2003; a sister, Eula Schindler; two brothers, Elbert and Lloyd and a step son-in-law, Kenny Cannon.
Friends may call on Tuesday, June 25, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark where a Masonic Service will be held at 6:45 p.m.
