Vernon H. Wilkins
NEWARK: A funeral service for Vernon H. Wilkins, 94, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Wally McLaughlin officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark and 12 to 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Vernon went to be with his Savior and his dear wife on December 30, 2012, at Arlington Care Center. He was born June 25, 1918, in Mt. Perry, Ohio, to the late Murray A. and Dottie M. (Snider) Wilkins.
Vernon was a 1936 graduate of Thornville High School. He married A. Mable (Davidson) Wilkins, of Lost Creek, KY on March 12, 1944 in Long Beach, CA where he was stationed with the United States Army. They returned to Newark in 1945.
He worked for the railroad, A & P, Owens-Corning Fiberglas and retired from Kaiser Aluminum Company in Newark where he was a crane operator for 33 years.
He and his wife were co-founders of the Newark Brethren Church, N. 26th St. Newark, where they attended up until the time of his last illness.
In his younger years, he was known for his flower and vegetable gardens.
He is survived by his daughters, L. Kay Powell (and husband Harold E. Powell, Jr.) of Mifflintown, PA and Ruth A. Sunkle of Thornville; grandchildren, Tracy L. (Powell) Markle of Mifflintown, PA and Capt. Wolf J. Powell U.S.M.C. (and wife Sarah) of Twentynine Palms, CA; great-granddaughter, Tiffany L. (Markle) Mast (and husband Justin B. Mast) of Mifflintown, PA, and several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by brother, Clarence Wilkins and sister, Bernice Mack.
