Sylvia Price Obituary

Sylvia Elizabeth Price

NEWARK: Sylvia Elizabeth Price, age 75, of Newark, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2013 at her home.

Sylvia was born January 8, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida to Doris (Adams) and Edward Jones. When she was two years old, she moved with her family to Newark. She married in the early 1960's and had a son, Vincent (Vinny) Price, Jr., that she truly treasured. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and plied her skills in both her professional and personal community for over 40 years. She was gruff in many ways and a "no nonsense" type of person, but she was still the gentle, caring soul her church family went to when their loved ones needed in-home care. She also extended her healing hands to her mother and brother when they were ill. Sylvia gave of her time, love and nursing care, willingly and tenderly, and also with a strong will to encourage her patients to work hard to recover.

Her favorite past times were being with her family, volunteering at The Works (The Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology), gardening, and doing arts and crafts, including creating magnificent quilts and beautiful handbags. She recently said that she felt she had lived her life just the way she wanted to and truly enjoyed being a care giver and being a student and teacher of arts and crafts.

Sylvia leaves to cherish her memory her son, Vincent Price of Newark; her siblings, Silas (Gloria) Jones of Long Beach, CA, Barbara (Lee) Hall of San Diego, CA, Thomas (Renee) Jefferson of Chicago, IL, Yvonne Jefferson Davis of Blacklick, Billy (Debbie) Jefferson of Newark, and Edward (Gloria) Folds of Westerville; also missing her will be her grandchildren, Briana and Jova of Newark; her beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her extended family of friends.

She was preceded in death by her wonderful mother, Doris Jefferson, her dear brother, David Jones, and many aunts and uncles of times gone by. We know she will have that shy smile on her face when she sees them standing together with open arms at the gates of Heaven to welcome her home.

Per Sylvia's request, there will not be a viewing. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Trinity A.M.E. Church, 64 East Church Street, Newark, with the Reverend Michael Menefield officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Trinity A.M.E. Church or The Works.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark.

Dear Victor,
Words can't describe how sorry I am that your mother died. She must have been a wonderful mom to have raised such a fantastic son like you. I was your home economics teacher at NHS and you were my son, Scott's, REE camp counselor. I really enjoyed having you in class and have fond memories of you as a student and counselor.

To Sylvia's family - I had the privilege of knowing Sylvia when I was the secretary to Fr. Dean Mathewson and Sylvia worked at St. Francis de Sales school. She was one of the hardest working women (or men) that I had ever met. I had not seen Sylvia for several years, then a couple of summers ago my granddaughter was attending a camp at the Works and Sylvia was there. We talked a couple of times. You are right in saying she was a "no nonsense person". She had no patience with those who didn't do their job as well as they could. I'm sure she will be very missed by all those who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Sylvia was very kind and loving to me when I was a little girl, like an extra grandma. She always took me to church and we'd go thrifting to find little treaures. I regret having lost touch with her. She'll be dearly missed and her family is in my prayers.
