A. Mable (Davidson) Wilkins

NEWARK: Anita Mable (Davidson) Wilkins, 92, of Newark, went to be with her Lord on Monday, June 18, 2012, unexpectedly at her home. Mable was born December 18, 1919, in Hazard, Kentucky, the oldest daughter of the late Beach C. and Ida M. (Napier) Davidson. She attended Riverside Training School in Lost Creek, Kentucky and went on to Caney Consolidated School to earn a teaching certificate.

Mable married Vernon H. Wilkins, of Newark, who survives, on March 12, 1944, while he was stationed with the US Army in Long Beach, California. They returned to Newark in 1945.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years; daughters, L. Kay (Harold E. Jr.) Powell of Mifflintown, PA, Ruth A. Sunkle of Newark; grandchildren, Tracy L. (Powell) Markle, Lt. Wolf J. Powell; one great granddaughter, Tiffany L. (Markle) Mast all of Mifflintown, PA; a sister, Anna Belle Coy of Louisville, KY and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

A brother, Pryce C. Davison and a sister, Ruth (Davidson) Bagwell both of Louisville, KY preceded her in death.

She had been a teacher in Newark City Schools for many years and also at St. Francis. During her time as a teacher in Newark and during her retirement, she often tutored students in her home. After her retirement, she served as a substitute teacher and a reading aide for several years. She loved teaching and each year she grew fond of her students, regretting seeing her students leave her classroom, only to fall in love with the fresh new faces entering her classroom each fall. In her younger years, Mrs. Wilkins was known for her flower and vegetable gardens and in later years, her hand sewn quilts.

A co-founder of the Newark Brethren Church on N. 26th Street in Newark, she was still a deaconess at the time of her death. For many years, she faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and VBS teacher. Mrs. Wilkins was an avid supporter of the varsity volleyball program at Newark High School.

Family and friends may call 2-4 & 6-8PM, Friday, June 22, 2012, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st Street in Newark. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the funeral home at 11AM, calling will also be observed one hour prior to the service. Her nephew, Ike Davidson will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
