NEWARK: A funeral service for Carl R. McClain, Sr., age 72, of Newark, will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Kevin Blade officiating. Inurnment will take place in Cedar Hill Cemetery at a later date with military honors provided by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.
Mr. McClain passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Newark Healthcare Center. He was born October 22, 1939 in Newark, Ohio to the late Rev. Arthur L. and Helen (Horst) McClain.
Mr. McClain served in the United States Navy from 1957-1959 where he was the boxing champion for the 6th Fleet and continued his enjoyment of the sport by watching boxing and cage fighting. He worked as a laborer with Roper Corporation and retired from the custodial department of Granville Schools. He also dispatched for Hencliff/Riss International. An outdoorsman, Carl enjoyed fishing, especially on trips to Quebec, Canada and hunting. He was a member of First Community Church of Buckeye Lake and was a member of the Newark Eagles for 30 years.
He is survived by a son, Carl R. "Shotie" (Margarita) McClain, Jr., and daughters, Deborah Stotler of Pennsylvania and Rebecca "Becky" Palms of Illinois; numerous grandchildren; sister, Margretta West of Newark; aunt, Lillian Steddum of Heath; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Don McClain and Bob McClain; and a nephew, Arthur McClain.
The family wishes to thank his sister, Margretta, for her caring and support and thanks to his caregiver of thirteen years, Tasha Davis, for her wonderful care.
Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the funeral home, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark, where an Eagles Service will be held at 4:45 p.m.
